Penn State: Joe Paterno Still Getting Paid Is Slap in Faces of Alleged Victims
It looks like the officials at Penn State still don’t get it.
Despite enduring the most horrific scandal to ever hit collegiate sports, they refuse to cut ties with the man that was in charge during this dark period.
In a statement released on Thursday by Steve Garban, chair of the Board of Trustees and John Surma, vice chairman, it was revealed that former head coach Joe Paterno is still getting paid by the school:
"Coach Paterno remains employed by the University as a tenured faculty member. The details of his retirement are being worked out and will be made public when they are finalized. Generally speaking, the University intends to honor the terms of his employment contract and is treating him financially as if he had retired at the end of the 2011 football season.
"
What is the deal with Penn State and their unconditional loyalty to Paterno? What has he done to earn the proper benefits that one would earn with retirement?
We all know Paterno wasn’t the one accused of molesting kids, that’s Jerry Sandusky’s turf. But the complete lack of institutional control regarding the situation is inexcusable and without doubt unforgivable. He didn’t deserve a second chance. Use his age as an excuse all you want, but this was not a one-time deal. This is happened over-and-over again over more than a decade.
Even once the story broke and the story became worldwide, Paterno seemed clueless on the matter. He didn’t understand that it’s not OK to be aware of child molestation and turn the other cheek. Watching Sandusky continue to conduct business with his charity dedicated to children, it reaches a whole different level of negligence.
There’s no going back with Paterno at this point, the ties between the two parties have to be terminated completely.
Paying Paterno a substantial amount of money at this point is a complete slap in the face of the alleged victims. They’ve ignored allegations long enough, and now they show their condolences by rewarding the person in charge.
Is Penn State afraid that Paterno would sue the pants off it? Is PSU afraid of the student and alum backlash that would come with completely cutting the cord?
Whatever the reason may be, keeping Paterno on the payroll is a gutless action that should have the taxpayers and victims enraged and ready to take action.
