Inside the NBA Crew's Top 50 Player Rankings Heading into 2024-25 Season

Bleacher Report NBA StaffOct 17, 2024

The 2024-25 NBA season tips off this week, and outlets all over the internet have published their individual player rankings.

At Bleacher Report, we have the ultimate trump card: The legendary Inside the NBA crew's official top 50.

Charles Barkley, Shaquille O'Neal and Kenny Smith all made their own top 50s (you can find links for those below). Barkley's was guided in large part by versatility. Shaq emphasized winning. And Smith based a lot of his calls on six critical factors (scoring, rebounding, passing, defense, leadership and the ability to control the pace of a game).

When all three lists were in, B/R combined them for an aggregate final 50.

To get there, players were given 50 points for a first-place vote, 49 points for a second-place vote, 48 points for a third-place vote—all the way down to one point for their 50th pick. The final rankings were based on who had the most points overall from the three panelists. Ties were broken based on who had the highest ranking by any two analysts.

Last week, we looked at the first 30. Now, it's time to dive into the top 20.

Each of the analysts had their own approaches to their individual top 50s, but there were two general criteria that drove this aggregate top 50: versatility and winning.

Barkley and Smith both discussed the first factor. Barkley said great players have to be able to affect the game in multiple ways. Smith broke it down even further, saying points, rebounds, assists, leadership, defense and the ability to change the pace of the game were considered throughout the exercise.

And those two, along with Shaq, were clearly and understandably influenced by the level of team success everyone below has achieved (or not achieved).

After five seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers, in which he averaged 23.0 points, 4.5 assists and 3.1 threes while shooting 39.7 percent from deep, Paul George joined the Philadelphia 76ers to turn a dynamic duo into a Big Three with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

On paper, the fit couldn't be much better. Maxey and Embiid bookend a traditional starting lineup at the 1 and the 5, and both like to do plenty of damage inside the three-point line. George is still one of the league's best high-volume floor spacers. And against opponents' second- or third-best defenders, he should be able to get to the rim plenty, too.

"I'm really excited about my Sixers," Barkley said. "Especially with the addition of Paul George."

It's not hard to see why. As a No. 3 (or 2B), George should be in for a big season.

Inside the NBA may be a little lower on Victor Wembanyama than consensus, but they weren't able to keep him out of the top 20.

After Wemby averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 3.6 blocks and 1.8 threes (an unprecedented basic line) as a rookie, his rise is undeniable.

He's already the scariest shot-blocker in the league. He can score at all three levels. His passing was an underappreciated aspect of his first campaign. And with Chris Paul now on his team, he should get significantly easier looks than he did in 2023-24.

In fact, the only thing that's really holding him back (at least on this list) is Shaq and his tough standards for fellow centers.

When asked about the big man having Wemby outside his top 30, Barkley said, "Shaq's never gonna put anybody who's a big guy high enough."

Team: Dallas Mavericks

Age: 32

Kyrie Irving has long been one of the NBA's best, most dynamic on-ball creators and scorers. And after a tumultuous few years with the Brooklyn Nets, he's settled into a perfect role as a high-volume second option alongside Luka Dončić.

Over his season and a half with the Dallas Mavericks, Kyrie has averaged 26.0 points, 5.4 assists and 3.0 threes while shooting 40.6 percent from deep. He was a crucial part of Dallas' run to the Finals last year.

And while he's probably entering the post-prime portion of his career, Irving's creativity and offensive skill set will still be a big factor in the 2024-25 season.

With opponents being forced to focus so much defensive attention on Dončić, Kyrie is often able to exploit perimeter players who simply aren't equipped to stop him.

Paolo Banchero was one of the least efficient scorers in the NBA last season, but he had a coming out party in a first-round playoff series against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Orlando Magic eventually lost in seven games, but Banchero averaged 27.0 points, 8.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.3 threes, while shooting 40.0 percent from deep.

Showing that kind of point-forward upside on the game's biggest stage as a 21-year-old was encouraging for Magic fans, who have to be expecting even more of a breakout after the addition of some experience.

"I think they're gonna be very good," Barkley said of Banchero's squad. "I think going out and getting Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is gonna really help them. They got a bunch of young guys, and he's gonna bring great veteran leadership in there."

KCP will indeed bring a steady hand to the rotation, as well as desperately needed floor spacing. With defenses having to pay a little more attention to the three-point line, Banchero should get some easier looks at the basket.

Ja Morant looked to be ascending to face-of-the-league status before suspensions and a shoulder surgery limited him to 70 appearances over the last two seasons.

The career detour has definitely impacted his standing around the league, especially in the eyes of Smith, who would've had him in the top five if the last two campaigns had been a little smoother.

Of Smith's six factors, there's really only one in question right now.

"You can't lead your team if you're not playing and you're doing things off the court that don't allow you to play," Smith said. "So your leadership is in question."

If Ja answers that question this season and produces the way he typically has (26.7 points, 7.5 assists and 5.8 rebounds since the start of 2021-22), Memphis could be right back in the mix for a title.

"He's gonna make everybody better because he's gonna make their responsibilities less," Smith said. "Memphis is a top-four team if he's healthy."

The Inside the NBA crew is higher on Bam Adebayo than just about every other outlet, with Barkley having him all the way up at No. 12 on his individual list.

"His mental toughness makes him special," Barkley said.

And it's not hard to see where that description is coming from when you watch the Miami Heat.

On a team that struggles with availability, Adebayo has played 70-plus games in each of the last two seasons. He's the anchor of a perennially stout defense. He's more capable of switching onto the perimeter than most bigs.

And even in a league where centers are increasingly empowered to create for others, he's still one of the best passers at his position.

Since the start of the 2019-20 campaign, Adebayo has averaged 18.7 points, 9.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.0 blocks.

Jalen Brunson's meteoric rise from second-round pick to NBA backup to starter may have peaked in 2023-24, when he averaged 28.7 points and 6.7 assists and finished fifth in MVP voting.

It also surprised plenty of fans and analysts, with at least one notable exception.

"I've watched him since high school, and all he's been is a winner," Smith said. "Nothing that he's doing is surprising me because he's always been a winner."

If there's another level for Brunson to reach, the New York Knicks are undoubtedly title contenders. But with Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns now on the team, it's safe to assume we'll see slightly less offensive volume from Brunson.

Of course, that doesn't keep him out of the top 15. And with a little more help on that end of the floor, he should be able to focus a little more on lifting others (rather than getting his own shot).

That, in turn, should lead to plenty more winning for Brunson.

One of the most consistent scorers in the league, Devin Booker has quietly averaged 25-plus points in each of the last six seasons (and he was at 24.9 the year before the streak started).

Only 12 players in league history had more 25-plus-point-per-game seasons in their first nine years in the league (and only seven of those 12 played in the three-point era).

Booker has developed into more than a scorer, too. Last season, when he was often tasked with being the Phoenix Suns' primary creator, he averaged a career-high 6.9 assists.

And he's piled up all this production while often playing with other on-ball stars.

"I think he gets short-changed, even with me, because he plays with [Kevin Durant] and Bradley Beal ... and then before that, he was with Chris Paul," Smith said. "He's always been with someone who has a big load."

As Durant enters his age-36 campaign, there's a real chance for Booker to assert himself as the unquestioned alpha for a title contender.

Anthony Davis was top-10 in MVP voting in three of his last five seasons with the New Orleans Pelicans, but he hasn't picked a single vote over his last four campaigns.

Being a clear No. 2 can certainly change the perception of you around the league.

But Davis has somewhat quietly been one of the league's most dynamic two-way forces over the last two seasons, averaging 25.2 points, 12.6 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.2 blocks and 1.1 steals per game.

In the same stretch, the Los Angeles Lakers have been plus-3.3 points per 100 possessions with AD on the floor and minus-3.4 when he's off.

And his ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor is a big part of why he rounded out Barkley's individual top 10.

"He's a terrific all-around player," Barkley said. "He can dominate the game in different ways. You cannot be a great player if you can't win a game in multiple ways. He can win it offensively, defensively, rebounding, scoring."

We may not see Anthony Edwards outside the top 10 on lists like this for much longer.

If he becomes more of a leader, Smith said "He could easily be at 2-3 next year."

When asked if he thinks Ant can become the face of the league, Barkley said, "I do."

And after his last couple of seasons (and postseasons) it's easy to buy into the hype.

In three playoff runs, Edwards has averaged 27.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 3.1 threes, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks per game.

No one in NBA history matches or exceeds all six of those marks for their careers. And if you drop the qualifier for threes per game, LeBron James is the only name added to the list.

Already one of the most exciting scorers in the NBA, Edwards has improved his playmaking ability in recent seasons, too. And when he's locked in, his defense can neutralize an opposing star.

He may be in for a bit of an adjustment with Julius Randle heading to the Minnesota Timberwolves (he holds the ball a bit more than KAT), but it's hard to imagine anything slowing Edwards' rise.

Boston Celtics fans aren't going to love this placement.

Over the last five years, Nikola Jokić is the only NBA player with more postseason wins over replacement player than Jayson Tatum. In the same stretch, in the regular and postseason combined, Boston is a whopping plus-2,775 points with Tatum on the court. No one's raw plus-minus is higher.

And just one more note on this half-decade sample. Since the start of the 2019-20 campaign, Tatum has been one of the league's most consistently available stars and averaged 26.8 points, 7.9 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3.0 threes, while shooting 37.1 percent from deep.

So, how is he just barely cracking this top 10?

Well, for one thing, Boston's perennial success is more about the strength of the collective than an individual superstar. For years (and especially during last season's title-winning campaign), the Celtics have had rotations packed with top-50 -60 players. They're like a supercharged version of the 2003-04 Detroit Pistons.

And that may suppress Tatum's individual production a bit. On a worse team, he might put up more numbers.

He's also not quite the heliocentric offensive engine that some of the others in the top 10 are. He doesn't control every facet on that end like Jokić or Dončić, too.

Boston fans will rightfully point out that he's underrated on defense and that he should get more credit for leading his team to so many wins at such a young age. And what this might all be setting up is a heck of a prove-it year for a player who really shouldn't need one.

This may be one of the biggest surprises of the exercise. Tatum has been almost universally accepted as Boston's best player for the last five or so years. But after Jaylen Brown won both Eastern Conference Finals MVP and Finals MVP, there may suddenly be a debate.

Smith still had Tatum one spot above Brown, citing his physicality and ball-handling. But the big men, Shaq and Barkley, flipped those two, each having Brown one spot ahead.

When asked what separates the two, Barkley said, "Not much.

I could have flip-flopped those," he added. "But Jaylen had just won a Finals MVP, so I got him there."

Shaq put it more simply, saying Brown was "the guy" on the way to the championship.

And though Tatum has certainly had his playoff moments, there is something to be said for the way Brown has risen to some huge moments over the course of his career. It's not easy to measure, but Brown has that sort of Mamba mentality that former players and plenty of fans understandably love.

His 22.9 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.2 threes and 1.2 steals per game over the last four postseasons are nice, but it's those intangibles that are really driving Brown's placement here.

Age: 36

A handful of important indicators (including points per game and effective field-goal percentage) dropped last season, but Kevin Durant continues to defy traditional notions of aging in the NBA, especially when you consider his injury history.

Last season, KD averaged 27.1 points, the third-highest mark ever in an age-35 (or older) campaign. He shot 52.3 percent from the field and 41.3 percent from three. And with the Phoenix Suns playing plenty of minutes without a traditional point guard, he also chipped in 5.0 assists per game.

With Tyus Jones and Monte Morris now in the fold, scoring should be easier than it was in 2023-24. Both can create open catch-and-shoot opportunities for Durant. And both are good enough outside shooters to command some defensive attention when KD is handling the ball.

So, even if "he doesn't have the same defensive prowess that he used to," as Smith said, Durant is still a pretty easy call for the top 10.

After finishing second in MVP voting in 2023-24, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander enters this season apparently still having plenty to prove.

Despite Barkley saying, "He does definitely deserve some more love," SGA finds himself outside the Inside the NBA crew's top five because Chuck has him at No. 8 and Shaq has him at 9.

Of course, that has a lot to do with the ability of the players in front of him. The Oklahoma City Thunder only having one playoff series win with Gilgeous-Alexander at the helm is likely a factor, too.

With these three, earning it often means team success.

But in his explanation for why SGA is in his personal top five, Smith analyzed well what makes the Thunder guard so good.

"Shai is No. 4 because of his ability to affect the game in so many ways," Smith said. "He creates a pace for the game beyond anybody else's."

That ability to slow everything down and play each possession at his own pace keeps defenses off guard and makes him a nightmare to contain.

And with Josh Giddey now on the Chicago Bulls, SGA will be able to control even more possessions. It's hard to imagine his scoring average climbing much higher than the 30.7 points he's averaged over the last two seasons, but his assists could come up from the 5.8 he's put over that same span.

If that happens and OKC gets a little deeper into the playoffs, it'll be hard to keep Gilgeous-Alexander out of the top five much longer.

The Golden State Warriors missed the playoffs in 2023-24, but it's hard to fault Stephen Curry, who, as Shaq accurately put it, is "still the best shooter in the game."

When Stephen Curry was on the floor, the Warriors had a point differential around that of a 50-win team, compared to one around that of a 40-win team when he was off.

And though his numbers waned after the All-Star break, Curry still averaged 26.4 points, 5.1 assists and a league-leading 4.8 threes per game, while shooting 40.8 percent from deep.

With a beefed-up supporting cast that now includes Buddy Hield, Kyle Anderson and De'Anthony Melton, it's fair to expect top-six impact from Curry.

It's genuinely absurd for a soon-to-be-40-year-old forward to have a reasonable case to be considered a top-five player in the NBA, but that's exactly what LeBron James has.

Last season, LeBron appeared in 71 games, his highest total since 2017-18. He averaged 25.7 points, 8.3 assists and 7.3 rebounds. Nikola Jokić and Luka Dončić were the only players who matched or exceeded all three marks. And LeBron's career-high 41.0 three-point percentage topped the long-distance marks of both of those MVP candidates.

He's not as explosive as he was in his prime. He can't overpower defenders quite like he used to. But LeBron's awareness is as good as it's ever been. His jumper is sharper. And he's still good enough at controlling individual possessions to warrant this rank.

He would be even higher, if not for Barkley, who was the only member of the Inside crew who had him outside the top 10.

Smith had him second, but Barkley said, "We're not livin' in the past, baby. We livin' in the present," when asked why he had LeBron 11th.

That could make for some fun debates between the two throughout this season.

Joel Embiid has already come out and said he doesn't expect to play in back-to-back games for the rest of his career. Injuries limited him to 39 regular-season games in 2023-24, and his finishing postseasons banged up has become the norm.

But the votes of the Inside the NBA guys added up to enough points to keep Embiid in the top five, in part because Smith had him over Luka.

"What separates Joel from Luka is physicality," he said. "He's so physically gifted that you have to double-team him every possession, and I think teams at times say, 'Well, maybe we can guard Luka one-on-one,' but they never say that with Joel. Never."

Playing Embiid straight up inside the three-point line is almost guaranteed to lead to either a decent look or a trip to the free-throw line. His ability to draw contact from or shoot over anyone is why he has the highest per-possession scoring average of all time (Luka's third).

But putting the ball in the basket isn't the only reason Embiid is here. He's a dominant defensive anchor when engaged. Last season, he was a more dynamic passer and averaged a career-high 5.6 assists. He's averaged double-figure rebounds in each of the last seven seasons.

The "if healthy" qualifier is a big one with Embiid, but if he's healthy, he can look like the best player in the world on any given night.

We might be getting sort of numb to the outrageous production of Luka Dončić.

In 2023-24, he put up a truly outrageous 33.9 points, 9.8 assists and 9.2 rebounds per game. It was the fifth season in a row in which he averaged at least 27 points, eight assists and eight boards.

That already ties him with Oscar Robertson for the all-time lead in total 27-8-8 seasons. The rest of the list—LeBron James, James Harden, Russell Westbrook and Michael Jordan—has combined for five.

Luka may be making his numbers seem normal, but they're most certainly not normal.

And now that he's taken a team all the way to the NBA Finals, it's pretty tough to pick at any part of Luka's resume.

In just about any other era of NBA basketball, he'd be a no-brainer pick for No. 1. He just happens to be nearing his prime when two players who are top 15-20 all-time are already in theirs.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, of course, is one of those top 15-20 all-timers, and he should be at or near the peak of his powers in 2024-25.

Last season, he finished top-four in MVP voting for the sixth straight season and became the first player in NBA history to average 30-plus points and 60-plus percent shooting.

He's one of the most dominant rebounders in the league. He just averaged a career-high 6.5 assists. He's eclipsed both one block and one steal per game in eight of his last nine campaigns. He led the Milwaukee Bucks to a title in 2021. And he can certainly impact the pace of a game, particularly when he gets transition opportunities.

"He's the one guy who can change all of those things the best, to me," Smith said of Giannis. "He's the top player in the league because he can change [the game] in six ways."

Or at least, he's Smith's top player in the league.

The two big men in the Inside the NBA trio went with a seemingly mild-mannered Serbian center who was a second-round pick back in 2014. And they're far from alone.

With Barkley and O'Neal both voting for Jokić, Bleacher Report and Inside the NBA join virtually every other major outlet in declaring him the best player in the world.

Consensus is about as clear on this as it was at the peak of LeBron or Michael Jordan's dominance. And it's not hard to see why there's such wide agreement on this.

No one elevates teammates like Jokić does. No one manipulates defenses like he does. His touch within 10 feet of the rim is as good as that of any NBA player we've ever seen. The days of the "best passing big" takes are behind us. He's firmly in the "best passers of all time" conversation.

Over the last four years, he's won three MVPs (and had a good argument for a fourth, based on either basic or advanced numbers) and produced at an almost comical level.

Since the start of the 2020-21 campaign, Jokić has averaged 26.1 points, 12.2 rebounds, 8.7 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.8 blocks in 34.1 minutes per game while posting a 66.3 true shooting percentage that's 8.9 points clear of the league average.

As Shaq said when he put him at No. 1 on his own list: "He does everything well. He does everything right."

There's simply no answer for Jokić. And if he gets anywhere near the kind of help his supporting cast is capable of providing, Denver should be very much in the mix for another title.
