CFB Fans Stunned After Refs Put 1 Second on Clock for Bryce Underwood, Michigan Hail Mary vs. WMU

No. 16 Michigan narrowly survived an upset loss at the hands of Western Michigan on Saturday, securing a 13-12 win following a wild finish.

As Michigan trailed 12-7 with seven seconds left in the fourth quarter and the ball at Western Michigan's 47-yard line, Wolverines quarterback Bryce Underwood's Hail Mary attempt went out of bounds as time expired.

However, officials determined that one second remained on the game clock. During Michigan's second Hail Mary try, Underwood connected with JJ Buchanan in the end zone to emerge victorious.

Fans and pundits were shocked by the finish.

NBC officiating analyst Terry McAulay suggested that the stadium clock used by officials during the replay review may have been different than the clock seen on the broadcast replay (via Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger).

Despite narrowly pulling out a win, Michigan's overall performance was concerning.

The Wolverines routinely struggled to move the chains, as they only mustered 12 first downs while converting just three of 10 opportunities on third down. They also committed nine penalties for 80 yards.

Michigan found the end zone on its opening drive of the game to take an early 7-0 lead, but it wouldn't score again until the final play of the fourth quarter.

Underwood finished 12-of-22 for 170 yards and one touchdown compared to one interception. He also rushed for 47 yards and a score, but lost a fumble.

Michigan now sits at 1-0, although the team will look to make improvements moving forward.
