WWE: Are We Bothered About Brodus Clay and His Debut?

Daniel MasseyJun 4, 2018

Brodus Clay has been yet another victim of social media when he revealed a few short weeks ago that he was going to be involved in a John Morrison beatdown. Now, while people seemed excited about Brodus’ re-debut, I was not.

The video packages tried to present Brodus as an unstoppable monster, but the fact that they just used footage from WWE Superstars and NXT showed me that they weren’t serious about him to begin with.

If he had had his own vignette, then maybe I would have been a little more interested in him, but instead, Brodus got a video package like a superstar gets every week—Sheamus, Wade Barrett and even Evan Bourne.

Brodus Clay first came to mainstream attention when he became the bodyguard for the Mexican aristocrat, Alberto Del Rio. He was actually a good character—for a bodyguard. His unique shape and size made him more believable as Del Rio’s protector, and I’m sure the fact that he had worked as a bodyguard before he became a professional wrestler helped as well.

However, having not been on television since Extreme Rules 2011, it is likely that casual fans will not have a clue who Brodus Clay is, and if that is the case, then the vignette aired over a month ago hyping his return would probably be completely confusing to them since he didn’t appear.

Brodus does not have the typical WWE superstar look. He is large, has a weird haircut (not the norm by today’s standards) and he doesn’t look like he is particularly good shape. That isn’t to say he looks fat, but he looks like a brute, which is a rare thing in this picturesque universe the WWE has evolved into.

This is a positive aspect of Brodus Clay, as it will set him apart from everybody else if he ever makes it onto Raw or Smackdown. He can pull off a few more moves than Big Show and Henry, as he seemed quite agile in the ring during his matches on WWE Superstars.

However, with John Laurinaitis now making a joke of Brodus by delaying his debut week in and week out, it will ultimately lessen the impact when he does eventually make it onto Smackdown or Raw.

One error on Twitter has seen Brodus Clay go from a potential powerhouse to a tired old gag on Monday Night Raw. People are saying they should give him a break, but I disagree.

Revealing storylines when one is in the wrestling business has got to be one of the biggest faux pas one can do. It is especially unprofessional when the storylines will be airing live.

Brodus Clay should have taken more care in what he was putting on his Twitter account, and I don’t really have a lot of sympathy for the big fella.

People are becoming less interested in what Brodus Clay will do when he makes his debut and more interested in when he will actually appear on our screens. I am not denying that he may be able to put on good matches, but that fact remains that his debut has been ruined by himself, and there is no recovery from it in my eyes.

People in the know like myself are just going to see him as a bit of a laughingstock when he materialises on our televisions, and if he doesn’t immediately attack John Laurinaitis for holding him back, then he will appear weak.

So are we bothered about Brodus Clay and his debut? I would have to say no because I believe the hype factor (if there was any to begin with) has hit rock bottom, and any return will be met with silence from the crowd.

We have more important news to think about this year, like the return of Jericho and the rumours circulating around the return of Rob Van Dam and Brock Lesnar.

Brodus Clay is no longer big news.
