What Is The John Cena Classic?

Buying or Selling Latest Drew McIntyre Contract Rumors, WWE Legends Returning, More

Chris RolingMar 30, 2024

An already hot pro wrestling rumor mill has only managed to ramp up further with WrestleMania 40 just around the proverbial corner.

That's no great shock—but some of the rumblings making the rounds will turn heads.

There is, for example, buzz around names like John Cena and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin just before the event. And there's still chatter about one of the biggest names in the industry as he apparently heads for free agency despite having prominent positioning on the WrestleMania card.

To help fans keep up with the rapid pace of the mill at this critical time of year, here's a look at the most notable items and whether they're worth a buy or sell.

Latest Episode Does Massive Numbers

1 of 4

The March 25 edition of Raw ahead of 'Mania was a classic.

And it turns out the attendance reflected that.

According to WrestleVotes (h/t Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats), that attendance number was Raw's highest since 2019, where the after-WrestleMania show put up huge numbers, as always.

Those post-Mania shows are always massive given the seasonal-feeling reset to WWE programming as new storylines begin. So for a pre-Mania show to put up these kinds of numbers is a little wild.

Yet, it's an easy buy, given all fans knew would be happening. The Rock, CM Punk and so many others hitting pivotal moments in must-see storylines has a way of getting people to arenas.

Tactical Truck Hints at 'Mania Plans?

2 of 4

On that episode of Raw, astute viewers noticed that a particular spot featured particular names.

More specifically, viewers across social media noticed that during a parking lot brawl featuring The Rock, production trucks with images of Cena and Austin just happened to be framed in the background of a shot.

According to WrestleVotes (h/t Ortman), this is a case of "everything is done on purpose."

But we're going to have to sell on this one, or at least the idea one of or both legends will actually be at 'Mania and play a role in the outcome of matches. This is a nice nod to fans, but unless the company has totally reversed course on how it handles things, it would probably promote one of or both guys appearing at 'Mania so that non-hardcore fans are aware.

That, plus Cena and/or Austin getting involved in the already-messy tag match or the main event on Night 2, would flirt with overbooked silliness.

Verdict: Selling

WWE Reaches out to Legends About 'Mania?

3 of 4

Now, here's the big catch—another rumor says WWE has at least reached out to one of those guys.

The report comes from PW Insider Elite (h/t Ortman), who says WWE has reached out to and had talks with Austin.

But the idea of reaching out to some of the biggest names in the sport's history at the biggest annual event in the sport is obvious enough.

Problem is, there's a big difference between reaching out and actually being able to secure them. If Austin were wrestling for the first time since WrestleMania 38, WWE would be wildly promoting it. If Cena was available amid his messy Hollywood schedule, similar thought process.

If one or both guys are available, it's safe to presume there is merely a backstage segment or promo involvement, which may or may not hint at future plans.

Latest on Major Contract Saga

4 of 4

The saga around Drew McIntyre's contract remains one of the hottest topics in the sport despite the flood of 'Mania buzz.

And the latest major note, courtesy of PW Insider (h/t Ortman), strikes the same tune as prior notes by saying that McIntyre has yet to re-up on a deal with WWE.

This is interesting to fans because McIntyre's initial departure from WWE and big success in other promotions before his dominant return is well-known, making it feel like he's an obvious candidate to leave again, potentially for AEW.

But it's also a sell. There's a near-zero chance WWE would put a guy with an expiring contract in such a prominent position in weekly storylines, social media posts and on the 'Mania card itself (never mind an impending must-see feud with CM Punk) without a deal in place.

Because the fact is, it feels obvious he's winning a title at 'Mania, especially with the success of this new character. WWE has plenty to gain by letting McIntyre pretend he could leave the company while heeling it up.

Verdict: Selling
