2024 NBA Draft: Did Bronny James Prove He's NBA-Ready in 1st Year at USC?

Jonathan WassermanMar 19, 2024

Expectations for Bronny James at USC became unclear following last summer's cardiac arrest that forced him to miss time in the offseason and delay his debut.

With eyes watching his every move upon his return, the results were mixed, with some scouts willing to acknowledge the 19-year-old's difficult situation, and others having a harder time picturing a surefire pro.

James played mostly a supporting role for an underachieving USC team, making it difficult for him to effectively sell NBA teams. But it's still easy to detect why they'll give him a legitimate look this June, regardless of whether LeBron will come as a package deal.

Despite his unconvincing freshman stats and impact, there is a potential NBA spot for a player with Bronny's particular skill set and intangibles. The question is whether any team will be willing to invest and bet on his execution improving enough for him to eventually fill that role.

Projected NBA Role and Comparisons

Projected role: Three-and-D 2-guard

Comparisons: Quentin Grimes, De'Anthony Melton

The most likely offensive role for James is playing secondary ball-handler and spot-up shooter. He doesn't generate enough rim pressure or creativity for teams to use him as a primary initiator. Instead, he'll play alongside a point guard, space the floor and occasionally command ball screens, something he's comfortable passing and setting up teammates out of.

For scoring, he'll be highly dependent on converting in transition and making jump shots, either off the catch or one to two dribbles. He projects as more of a complementary piece who takes what's given to him, moves the ball and rarely makes an unforced mistake.

Defense is where he can separate himself from other guards on the roster. And assuming he continues to be effective sliding his feet, fighting through screens and making plays in passing lanes, James' most likely path to a rotation is as a three-and-D combo.

Draft ceiling: Late first round

Draft floor: Undrafted

In the late first round, all it takes is one team to see a worthwhile gamble on James' shooting progression and the likelihood it creates a three-and-D, rotational guard outcome.

There is also the potential LeBron James package-deal factor, which could increase the temptation to reach on Bronny earlier.

However, his scoring inefficiency has raised questions about his ability to create, finish in the half court and hit jumpers consistently. He hasn't demonstrated any single, convincing skill for scoring at the next level. And teams might not believe James' defense and passing IQ are enough to justify NBA minutes.

Physical Tools and Athleticism

USC lists Bronny James at 6'4", 210 pounds, adequate numbers for an NBA 2-guard and solid measurements for a combo. His physical tools become advantageous when he's playing point guard.

Looking back at previous NBA combines, his height and weight closely mirror Victor Oladipo's out of Indiana.

The two-time All-Star just packed more explosion and bounce. James can still elevate for big finishes above the rim on fast breaks. In the half court, he doesn't get as much vertical pop in the lane off of a few dribbles, though. He won't be a frequent visitor to the free-throw line.

He is quick, though, a trait that shows on defense. While his brain mostly fuels his defensive value, James still shows tremendous foot speed sliding side to side. And his frame appears strong enough to hold ground against most guards.

Shotmaking Potential

While the results this season were uncharacteristically inconsistent, shotmaking will be Bronny James' top weapon for scoring. Over the years, he's proved capable of converting jump shots in a variety of ways: Deep off the catch or movement, pulling up or stepping back. Despite underwhelming percentages at USC, he has a clear comfort level with his jumper and potential to provide shooting versatility for different situations.

Passing/Facilitating IQ

James is a skilled, high-IQ passer while reading defenses and making accurate deliveries. He shows poise in ball-screen situations, operating with effective pacing to let plays develop and teammates get free. He's sharp getting the ball to rolling bigs, and if they're not available, he's quick to find the rotating shooter on the wing. He generally makes good decisions and picks up a few simple assists each game, just by moving the ball and hitting teammates in rhythm.

Defense

The combination of foot speed, strength, IQ and focus has made James an excellent defender at the high school and college levels. He's difficult to shake free from in isolation, and he does a good job avoiding being taken out of a play by a screen. Off the ball, he's alert and actively looking to anticipate passes so he can make a play on the ball. NBA teams should ultimately picture him being able to guard either backcourt spot with his quickness and toughness.

Weaknesses

5 of 5

Creating High-Percentage Shots

James takes far more jump shots than layup or free-throw attempts. Most of his self-creation moves result in pull-ups or step-backs, as he lacks advanced ball-handling and burst to generate easier scoring chances around the basket.

Finishing

When James does get into the lane against a set defense, he has trouble exploding vertically. Some of his poor finishing is a result of him struggling to completely break free from his defender, so many of his attempts in the paint are tightly contested.

Shotmaking Consistency

James' shooting numbers at USC have disappointed scouts who were under the impression that shotmaking was one of his signature skills. He's struggled most in catch-and-shoot situations, which is worrisome for a player who'll be splitting time playing off the ball. He's had trouble generating rhythm, sometimes rushing shots, and other times taking too long to get them off.
