Zach LaVine Trade Rumors: Kevin Huerter, Harrison Barnes Named in Bulls, Kings Talks

Tyler ConwayJan 10, 2024

The Sacramento Kings have reportedly mentioned guard Kevin Huerter and forward Harrison Barnes as potential options in trade talks for Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine.

Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported the Bulls have a "level of interest" in Huerter, who has struggled in his second season with the Kings. The sweet-shooting guard is averaging his fewest points since his rookie season (9.8) while shooting a career-low 33.0 percent from three-point range.

Barnes has likewise seen his scoring average plummet to 11.1 points per game, though that's largely a byproduct of him taking fewer shots as younger players emerge ahead of him in the pecking order.

The Bulls would likely need significant additions to any LaVine trade centered on Huerter and Barnes. Huerter is only in the second season of a four-year, $65 million deal, and there are too many quality shooters in the NBA at this point to justify paying more than $16 million a year to a shoot-first player not even making a third of his threes.

Barnes is a quality veteran, but the Kings blew out the market by handing him a three-year, $54 million deal. It's hard to find justification for paying him $18 million next season and $19 million in 2025-26.

LaVine's contract, which runs through 2026-27 and pays him more than $40 million a year, is the biggest obstacle in the Bulls exploring his trade market. However, having one overpaid borderline All-Star is better than two overpaid role players.

The Kings would have to attach at least two first-round picks to Barnes and Huerter to make this a conversation worth having for Chicago—especially with teams like the Los Angeles Lakers waiting in the wings.
