NBA Trade Rumors: Dwight Howard and Deron Williams Together at Last
After Thursday night’s bludgeoning of the New Jersey Nets, the Orlando Magic's Dwight Howard must be reconsidering his request to be traded to there.
It is quite obvious that, outside of Deron Williams, the Nets' cupboard is awfully bare.
The Magic, despite their own deficiencies, have more to offer with their current roster than the Nets do at this time.
Williams has been recently quoted as saying that, “We need some more pieces, there’s no secret about that. There’s not many starters on our team right now. We have a lot of great role players, a lot of guys who know their job, but in this league you need some top-tier guys so you can get the job done.”
He's also shown frustration with being double-teamed because of that lack of talent. If I were a Nets fan, I'd be a little less concerned for trading for Dwight and more worried about Deron wanting out town.
There's no better way to add to an already losing culture than to alienate your new team.
If he’s frustrated now, wait until his career numbers go down, the New Jersey Nets go sub .500, and they miss the playoffs.
Added to that misery, he'll be watching the Magic in the playoffs.
The more successful the Magic are this year coupled with a dreadfully unsuccessful season in New Jersey, may prove to make Williams' sales pitch go awkwardly.
The pitch might go something like this. "Hey Dwight, I know that the Nets have been the NBA's whipping post for the last six years and haven't had a winning season in that time period, but if you come here we're going to win with you, me, and a bunch of role players."
I'm not thinking that will go over well.
Despite the fact that the Orlando Magic have garnished a lot of unwanted attention due to the Howard's situation, they look no worse than a four seed in the East.
Even with Brook Lopez turning in his best season in 2010-11, the Nets went 24-58. Granted, they upgraded their roster with arguably the best point guard in the game, but even with him, the Magic would finish ahead of the Nets.
If it’s winning that Dwight wants, he needs to look deeper than bringing his talents to the Nets and start talking about bringing Deron to the Magic.
