Kendrick Perkins: Thunder Star Has Right to Call out Chris Webber for Trash Talk

Alex KayDec 29, 2011

Kendrick Perkins had enough of NBA TV analyst Chris Webber talking smack about him and decided to call him out in a public forum.

The Oklahoma City Thunder center tweeted last night that, “I’m tired of chris webber hatin on me get a ring first and then I can respect ya comments other wise keep my name out of ya mouth."

This comment stemmed from the fact that Webber has repeatedly trashed his skills as a defender on television. Last night must have been the final straw as C-Webb once again disrespected his abilities after a 98-95 win over the Memphis Grizzlies.

Perkins noted that Webber never earned a ring in his 15-year NBA career as he faltered with the Sacramento Kings and was unsuccessful chasing one in the twilight of his career with the Philadelphia 76ers and Detroit Pistons.

The 27-year old center has already captured a championship during the 2008 Boston Celtics’ run and was close to a second in 2010, but was injured before Game 7 and his team eventually lost to the Lakers.

That game could have very well gone the other way had Perkins been out there to defend and grab rebounds, a testament to his abilities that Webber is knocking for absolutely no reason.

Perkins clarified today that he never meant to insinuate that Webber was a poor player, because he was clearly not, but he is sick and tired of a man who wasn’t able to lead his team to glory slinging mud for no reason.

He also has every right to feel slighted by his statements because he knows and most NBA analysts and fans agree that he’s a great one-on-one defender.

Perk has been guarding the opposing teams’ best big man since his time with the Celtics and is continuing to do so with the Thunder.

He’s consistently proven he can contain players like Dwight Howard, Marc Gasol, Nene, Andrew Bynum and any other skilled big in the league with single coverage.

Oklahoma City has nothing to worry about with their center and they have to know they made a great move to acquire him last season.

Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant are the two Thunder stars, but they would have a much tougher road to a championship without a rock solid defensive presence in the middle.

Now that they finally have one, it will not be a surprise for the team to win an NBA Finals sooner than later. Perk will without a doubt be a major reason why.
