Glasgow Rangers: An Update from North of the Border
With this being my 50th article on Bleacher Report, I've decided to write about what's closest to me. And what's closest to me, is Glasgow Rangers.
With over half the season gone, Rangers are clear at the top. They sit four points above rivals Celtic and are a massive 15 points ahead of 3rd place Dundee United.
That's what the stats say, but what do I think?
I've only watched the Rangers in person once this season. Living in South Africa is not conducive to holding a season ticket. But I did make it to Ibrox on Boxing Day to watch us take on Motherwell.
Motherwell had a few ex-Ranger players, including a couple who made quite an impact at Ibrox. Stephen Hughes was just about a regular after breaking into the Rangers first team a few years back. Ross McCormack played much less for the Rangers, but did score a crucial Champions League goal, away at FC Porto.
On Boxing Day, it was their job to probe the Rangers' defense. They did a lot more than that, as the Rangers were torn apart time and again by the young Motherwell side. Rangers had little to offer and relied heavily on Davie Weir and Carlos Cueller to keep them in the game.
How Rangers held onto all three points at home, I honestly don't know. Rangers ran out 3-1 undeserved winners.
But on the other hand, we won and we keep on winning, which is the mark of a title-winning side. Just ask our neighbours Celtic. So I suppose, long may it continue.
What about this January transfer window?
Ugo Ehiogu has gone to Sheffield United, and there is increased interest in Daniel Cousin from Fulham. Rangers are willing to hold out for the 3 million pound release clause in his contract, so it's not a done deal. Craven Cottage or Ibrox?
Tottenham Hotspur appear to be backtracking on their decision to end all interest in Alan Hutton. Rangers are pretty eager to cash in on the right back and a deal could yet be done.
I hope not, as it's a shame to see my club selling such good players to England for financial reasons. The EPL has a lot to answer for.
So Rangers continue to fight on all four fronts. A good run in the UEFA Cup is not out of the question. Neither is a domestic treble, which would be a tremendous achievement in this day and age.
We may be playing poorly, but we're winning and unlike at Newcastle, that's all that matters!
