FIFA World Cup 2010: Jean Beausejour's Goal Gives Chile 1-0 Win Over Honduras

Andrew JordanJun 16, 2010

After four days of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Honduras and Chile finally got underway at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.

And what a great match it turned out to be, as Jean Beausejour scored the only goal of the match in the 34th minute to give Chile the 1-0 win.

Going into the match, Chile were looking to win their first World Cup match in exactly 48 years after they beat Yugoslavia in the 1962 World Cup third place match, while Honduras were looking for their first-ever World Cup victory.

And from the beginning of the match, there was no question that Chile were going to dominate in Nelspruit, as they continued to get some great chances against the Honduras defense, but they weren't able to put the ball past Honduras' keeper Noel Valladare.

However, that all changed in the 34th minute, as some great buildup from Chile's attack resulted in Mauricio Isla getting free inside the box. He fed Beausejour with a perfect pass that was tapped into the back of the net, giving Chile the 1-0 lead.

After the goal Chile remained on the attack, but were unable to get a good enough shot to trouble Valladare, and the score at the half was 1-0 in favor of Chile.

As the second half begun, it quickly became apparent that Chile were going to continue to dominate the match. They should have sealed the match in the 64th minute as Waldo Ponce's header was quickly saved from Valladare in what has to be one of the best saves of the tournament.

Despite the setback, Chile continued to press and should have been able to trouble Valladare more often, but they weren't able to land any more good shots on target. Chile continued to mess up some fantastic scoring opportunities with some terrible communication.

Regardless, Chile have broken their 48 year hex and have now won their first World Cup match since 1962 with the 1-0 win.

Chile are now on top of Group H with three points while Honduras are in last, but that is due to change with the Spain vs Switzerland match coming up shortly.

Honduras' next match will be against Spain on June 21 at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, while Chile's next match will be against Switzerland at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on the same day.
