FIFA World Cup 2010: Does Pim Verbeek Need to Start Josh Kennedy Against Ghana?

Callum D'SouzaJun 15, 2010

As Australia encountered Germany in their first match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, fans were quietly confident that the "underdogs" could maybe, just somehow, pull off an upset against one of the world's most feared teams.

Sadly for the Socceroos, this was not to be. The Australians were thrashed 4-0, torn apart by the deadly German midfield.

Many seemed shocked, but with an aging back-line up against a relatively youthful and incredibly structured attack, Pim Verbeek's men were always going to struggle against the talented Germans.

Another glaring error made by Verbeek was his selection. The Dutchman left Harry Kewell and Marc Bresciano on the sideline (subject to fitness), and left lanky striker Josh Kennedy warming the bench.

Instead of having a lone striker present, Verbeek opted to utilize Hull City's Richard Garcia as the roving forward. Predominantly a winger for the Tigers in the Premier League, Garcia playing as a striker was always going to weaken the Australian attack.

Many felt Kennedy's presence would have ensured a stronger, flowing attack, rather than the stop-start attack that was so evident. To be fair, the Germans were superb in shutting down the Australian midfield, as well as ensuring many men were behind the ball.

However, what's done is done and now the Socceroos' focus turns to their next encounter against the enthusiastic West Africans: Ghana. The Ghana matchup is vital; it will decide whether Australia have any further involvement in the World Cup.

The Black Stars boast a pacey attack, but unfortunately will be without the reassuring figure of Michael Essien. However, Ghana defensively can have the tendency to fall into lapses of concentration, and although maestro Tim Cahill may miss the clash with suspension, Australia will have a strong chance to catch Ghana out.

However, it will come down to squad selection and structure. The Australians have to ensure they communicate and keep their attack fast and flowing. Does this mean Josh Kennedy has to be present?

The 6'4" striker can add much-needed aerial height, as well as strength and control. Likely to be up against John Mensah, the Ghanaian captain and the heart of their defence, Kennedy could have the potential to use his height as a much-needed advantage.

The Black Stars will prove to be an extremely tough opponent for Pim Verbeek's men, but if the Socceroos can find a win, then their World Cup campaign is right back on track.
