Bastian Schweinsteiger, David Villa Voted into MLS All-Star XI vs. Real Madrid

Tom SunderlandJul 7, 2017

Bastian Schweinsteiger and David Villa have been named as two of the European imports set to participate in Major League Soccer All-Stars' game against Real Madrid on August 2.

A selection of MLS's best and brightest will take on the European champions, and the squad will also include Kaka, Michael Bradley and goalkeeper Tim Howard, via the MLS Twitter account:

Schweinsteiger's Chicago Fire team-mate Nemanja Nikolic will also be a part of the All-Star squad after being included in the MLS All-Star Fan XI, as noted by the Fire's official website:

Goalkeeper: Tim Howard (Colorado Rapids)

Defenders: Greg Garza (Atlanta United), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City), DaMarcus Beasley (Houston Dynamo)

Midfielders: Bastian Schweinsteiger (Chicago Fire), Miguel Almiron (Atlanta United), Kaka (Orlando City SC), Michael Bradley (Toronto FC)

Forwards: David Villa (New York City FC), Nemanja Nikolic (Chicago Fire), Sebastian Giovinco (Toronto FC)

The fan-voted XI will be part of a 24-man squad to take on the European champions, with the full complement to be announced in mid-July.

It's a merit of former Bayern Munich star Schweinsteiger's undeniable class to have made the MLS All-Star squad in his first playing season in the Unites States, having arrived in Chicago from Manchester United in March.

It may help the German's case that Fire manager Veljko Paunovic also happens to be coach for the all-star team, but that may merely mean the Serb has had his chance to absorb Schweinsteiger's majesty in recent months.

The official MLS Twitter account also released a mural of the XI, who will be part of a squad tasked with attempting to restrain a Real Madrid that just became the first team to ever retain the UEFA Champions League:

Toronto FC are the joint-most heavily represented club in the lineup, with former Juventus striker Giovinco and United States national team star Bradley also present.

Schweinsteiger and Nikolic draw Chicago Fire level in that regard, while Atlanta United deserve credit for raising two participants of their own in defender Greg Garza and midfielder Miguel Almiron.

Real will be wary of the talent sitting among the MLS crew too, considering Orlando City star Kaka (Brazil, 2002), New York City talisman Villa (Spain, 2010) and Schweinsteiger (Germany, 2014) have each won World Cups.

Former Valencia, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid forward Villa, 35, will have particular reason to leave his mark against old rivals Real, against whom he has played more games than any other team in his career, per Transfermarkt.

The ex-Spain star has featured against Los Merengues on 28 occasions, winning 10 of those matches and losing 12, scoring 10 goals in the process, a tally he'll hope to add to at Soldier Field on August 2.

Real manager Zinedine Zidane has enjoyed an incredibly successful start to his career at the club's helm against European opposition, and now he knows part of the side he'll face when taking his team stateside next month.
