Bournemouth vs. Liverpool: Score and Reaction from 2016 Premier League Match

Christopher SimpsonDec 4, 2016

Bournemouth twice came from two goals down to beat Liverpool 4-3 in a thrilling encounter at the Vitality Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday.

Two goals in two first-half minutes from Sadio Mane and Divock Origi put Liverpool ahead before Callum Wilson pulled one back from the spot after 56 minutes.

Emre Can sent Liverpool two goals clear again, but substitute Ryan Fraser and then Steve Cook scored twice in as many minutes to equalise before Nathan Ake capitalised on a Loris Karius mistake in injury time to seal the win.

The Reds pressed their hosts from the outset and should have taken the lead after 10 minutes, but Origi failed to convert Nathaniel Clyne's excellent low cross from close range.

Liverpool continued to mount pressure and earned five corners in the first 15 minutes before taking the lead in the 20th minute when Mane raced on to Can's lofted through ball and held off Ake before touching it past goalkeeper Artur Boruc.

Two minutes later, they doubled their advantage when Jordan Henderson sought out Origi on the right. In a bid to reach it first, Boruc charged off his line, but the Belgian got there first and rounded him before curling it into the empty net from a tight angle.

Squawka Football and BT Sport commentator Ian Darke highlighted Liverpool's dominance:

The Cherries did forge a couple of opportunities late in the half, the first falling to Junior Stanislas when he was sent through on the right, but he fired his low cross straight into the path of Karius.

Bournemouth were denied a penalty soon after and were right to feel aggrieved as Roberto Firmino tripped Ake in the box, per Sky Football:

The hosts began the second half brighter than they had the first and before long were rewarded with a penalty after James Milner felled Fraser. Wilson confidently dispatched the spot-kick.

Liverpool's two-goal lead was restored just seven minutes later, though, when Mane teed up Can on the edge of the area and the German curled in a wonderful first-time effort.

Undeterred, the Cherries continued to search for a way back into the game, and Fraser tested Karius with a powerful effort, with the German just about proving equal to it.

At the other end, Milner came within millimetres of scoring directly from a corner, with goal-line technology to thank for sparing Boruc's blushes as he caught the ball almost entirely behind the line.

Bournemouth's Polish goalkeeper Artur Boruc (L) claims the ball on the goal-line very close to conceding a goal during the English Premier League football match between Bournemouth and Liverpool at the Vitality Stadium in Bournemouth, southern England on

Bournemouth grabbed their second goal from a rapid counter-attack, which saw the ball worked to Wilson on the right with Fraser on hand to convert his low cross after Benik Afobe missed it.

Less than three minutes later, the hosts were level after Fraser whipped in a dangerous cross from the right, which was expertly brought down and poked in by Cook.

Sky Sports pundit Matt Le Tissier was among many marvelling at the centre-back's deft control and finish:

If not for KariusAfobe would have fired the Cherries ahead moments later when he raced through, but the German did well to keep out his effort one-on-one.

Both sides pushed for a late winner, and Bournemouth were the ones who grabbed it—Cook fired a vicious effort at Karius from the edge of the area, and Ake was on hand to bundle home the rebound when the German failed to keep hold of it.

The win sees the Cherries climb into the top half of the table, and they'll feel confident heading into winnable fixtures against Burnley and Leicester City.

As for Liverpool, after going more than five hours without conceding, they shipped four to offer a stark reminder of their defensive frailties, particularly in the absence of Joel Matip.

Fortunately for the Reds, they host West Ham United—who have conceded nine goals in their last two matches—in their next game next Sunday and should be able to bounce back with a win.

Post-Match Reaction

Per BBC Sport's Emlyn Begley, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp believed Bournemouth were the deserved winners:

"

We opened the door and they ran through and scored some wonderful goals. So that's the deserved result.

It doesn't feel too good right now but sometimes we need it. Of course this can help us. No road is without rocks and stones.

It's three points, no more. You cannot be champions in December.

"

Meanwhile, Cherries manager Eddie Howe hailed his team's attitude: "It would have been easy for our players to give up and see out time, but our group knows not to give up. We scored at the right time, and the easy thing when you equalise is to sit back and defend that but thankfully the lads kept going."

Per Begley, he added: "In the second half we looked like scoring every time we attacked. For this club and everyone involved, it's made for a very special day. These days are huge for us. We'd never been in the Premier League until last season so we're making history for the club."
