La Liga Table 2016: Sunday's Week 7 Results and Updated Standings

Tom SunderlandOct 2, 2016

Atletico Madrid shot to La Liga's summit on Sunday after beating Valencia 2-0 at the Mestalla, while local rivals Real Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Eibar.

Antoine Griezmann and Kevin Gameiro provided second-half goals for Los Rojiblancos to see them past Los Che, but Gareth Bale's single effort was only enough to rescue a point for Real after Fran Rico put Eibar into a shock lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Barcelona wasted their opportunity to reclaim the lead later on Sunday, too, after dropping to a 4-3 defeat at Celta Vigo despite Gerard Pique's second-half brace, surrendering their second defeat of the campaign.

There was late drama at the Rosaleda, too, as Malaga struck twice in the last 10 minutes of their encounter against 10-man Athletic Bilbao to complete a 2-1 comeback and clinch just their second win of the season.

Espanyol also secured their third draw of the campaign after stumbling to a 0-0 stalemate at home to Villarreal, keeping their first clean sheet of the 2016-17 term.

Read on for a roundup of Sunday's scores from Spain's top flight, complete with a look to the updated standings and a recap of the latest results.

Recap

Antoine Griezmann missed from the penalty spot for the second time in the space of five days on Sunday, skewing his effort against Valencia after crashing an effort against the frame in Wednesday's meeting with Bayern Munich.

Atleti went in scoreless at the break, before Griezmann and Gameiro scored in the 63rd and 93rd minutes, respectively, and Yahoo's Andrew Gaffney highlighted the efficacy of the depth in their attack:

Valencia beat Alaves and Leganes in the past fortnight to claim their only points of the season, but caretaker manager Voro still sees his side lingering just above the bottom three after Sunday's outcome.

Goalkeeper Diego Alves did his best to keep Los Che in the tie with not one, but two penalty saves, but the impact of Gameiro, who set up Griezmann's opener, proved overwhelming, per Squawka:

Over in Galicia, Celta Vigo pulled off the weekend's greatest upset with a 4-3 win over Barca, where the hosts were unfortunate not to win by an even greater margin after initially gliding into a 3-0 lead.

Pione Sisto, Iago Aspas and a Jeremy Mathieu own goal put Celta 3-0 up before the break, while Pablo Hernandez netted in the 77th minute, meaning Pique's double and a Neymar penalty counted for little in the end, per Yahoo's Andrew Gaffney:

The defeat means manager Luis Enrique's side remain lodged in fourth spot behind third-placed Sevilla after seven matches, while Celta bounded up La Liga from 15th into 10th.

Atletico's result meant Real had an even worse day at the office following their sharing of the spoils with Eibar, meaning manager Zinedine Zidane's were prevented from taking La Liga's lead as their own.

Los Blancos' chief spoke to the media after Bale hit back to salvage a draw following Rico's sixth-minute breakthrough, and Zidane stressed the need to hit the ground running, per Real's official website:

"

Anything can happen in a match. We're not doing enough at the start in order to win the game. If you concede it's difficult because they are aggressive opponents who sit back and defend. We have to show more intensity from the start, we need to analyse things and the players are keen to do that. Perhaps we have to bring more intensity to the training sessions.

"

Later on Sunday, Aritz Aduriz thought his third-minute breakthrough was enough to hand Athletic Bilbao all three points in their trip to Malaga, but Mikel Balenziaga's sending-off close to half-time put Los Leones' lead in peril.

Malaga didn't look as though they'd take advantage until Sandro Ramirez and Duda scored in the 82nd and 83rd minutes, respectively, to quickly complete their turnaround, and OptaJose illustrated just how swift their revival was:

Bakary Kone received a second yellow in the dying minutes to ensure the Anchovies also finished with 10 men, but Malaga's comeback was nevertheless complete.

Elsewhere, Espanyol and Villarreal drew to a goalless scoreline in Barcelona, with the Yellow Submarine now unbeaten in eight consecutive matches, although half those results have ended in draws.
