Champions League Results 2016: Group Tables After Wednesday's Final Scores

Matt JonesSep 28, 2016

Atletico Madrid’s brilliant form in the UEFA Champions League continued on Wednesday, as they battled to a 1-0 win over fellow tournament contenders Bayern Munich.

In a surprisingly open first period, Yannick Carrasco pinged in a brilliant finish off the post to give last season's runners-up a lead at the break. Bayern pushed for an equaliser in the second period, although it was the hosts who had the best chance to score, with Antoine Griezmann rattling the crossbar with a penalty.

Elsewhere on a thrilling night of matches, Celtic and Manchester City played out a remarkable 3-3 draw, while Barcelona came from a goal down to beat Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1. There were also routine wins for Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain.

Atletico Shine Again in Europe

Atletico Madrid's Belgian midfielder Yannick Ferreira Carrasco (2ndL) celebrates with teammates after scoring during the UEFA Champions League Group D football match Club Atletico de Madrid vs FC Bayern Munich at the Vicente Calderon stadium in Madrid on

Having been eliminated by Atletico Madrid at the semi-final stage last season, Bayern Munich’s players would have been well aware of what their opponents were capable of. But breaking down Los Rojiblancos' mean defence, one that took them to the final last term, is easier said than done.

As is preventing Atletico’s attacking potency from set pieces and counter-attacks. Fernando Torres comically missed a header a couple of yards out from a corner, although Carrasco capped off a sizzling break with an excellent left-footed shot past Manuel Neuer.

Naturally, Carlo Ancelotti’s side came on strong after the break and had a wonderful opportunity to level through Robert Lewandowski, although he could only head wide when well placed. Griezmann then spurned the chance to add some gloss to the scoreline.

The win sees Atletico take control of the group, with FC Rostov and PSV Eindhoven playing out a 2-2 draw in the pool’s other fixture.

Per ESPN FC’s Dermot Corrigan, Bayern will be glad they don’t have to visit Spain again for a while:

Meanwhile, Bleacher Report UK reflected on Atletico’s magnificent home record in this competition:

The match of the night came in Glasgow, though. Celtic Park witnessed an opening 45 minutes played at a breathtaking tempo, with the home side taking an early lead through Moussa Dembele; replays seemed to suggest he was in an offside position, but the home fans did not care.

That goal set the tone for the rest of the half, and City were level in the 11th minute, with Fernandinho sweeping home left-footed after finding space in the penalty area. Afterwards, it was Sterling’s turn to take centre stage.

First, the England international turned in Kieran Tierney’s cross to put the hosts back in front. However, he soon made amends, dancing past a couple of defenders and calmly slotting past Craig Gordon to make it 2-2.

Per OptaJoe, these goals at both ends meant a unique record for the City man:

Even with a half-time break to clear their heads, Pep Guardiola’s team were caught on their heels for a second time in the match, with Dembele taking just 61 seconds to put Celtic 3-2 up. It was a fine finish, too, as he guided a spinning, high shot beyond Claudio Bravo on the turn.

City, who weren’t at their best here, showed moments of quality, though, as was the case with their third goal. David Silva delicately played in Sergio Aguero, and although Gordon stopped his shot, Nolito swept in the rebound.

Both teams had chances to win this one, although Celtic will no doubt be the happier with a point. Former world champion boxer and City supporter Ricky Hatton paid tribute to the Scottish champions:

In the group’s other game, Barcelona bounced back brilliantly after Thorgan Hazard put Gladbach ahead. Manager Luis Enrique introduced Arda Turan, who quickly got on the scoresheet, before Gerard Pique bundled home from close range after Yann Sommer spilled Luis Suarez’s strike.

The defender is enjoying a brilliant start to the season, and Ed Malyon of the Daily Mirror hailed his talismanic traits:

For Arsenal and Paris-Saint Germain, the evening was relatively straightforward. The former coasted to a 2-0 win over FC Basel, with a first-half brace from Theo Walcott enough to put this one to bed. Manager Arsene Wenger would have been a little miffed his side didn't score more on the night, as they spurned a host of chances.

PSG suffered a couple of scares in their fixture against Ludogorets. Unai Emery’s side fell behind to Natanael’s goal, but Blaise Matuidi levelled before half-time. A double from Edinson Cavani gave the French side a two-goal lead, but his strikes sandwiched a missed penalty from Cosmin Moti.
