La Liga Table 2016: Sunday's Week 3 Results and Updated Standings

Tom SunderlandSep 11, 2016

Valencia's search for their first points of the 2016-17 season continued on Sunday after Real Betis inflicted a 3-2 home defeat upon manager Pako Ayestaran's side at the Mestalla in LaLiga.

Los Che fought back from two goals down to draw level against Los Verdiblancos, but an injury-time winner from Betis forward Ruben Castro saw the away team keep Valencia locked in the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, Sporting Gijon's unbeaten start to the campaign advanced after a pair of first-half strikes from Nacho Cases and Duje Cop saw them through to a 2-1 victory against Leganes.

Recap

Valencia's dismal 2016 reached new depths on Sunday after their pointless LaLiga quest continued following a late defeat at home to Real Betis, who clinched their first win of the new term at the Mestalla.

Castro and Joaquin put Betis two goals ahead after Enzo Perez saw red for Valencia, and after drawing level thanks to goals from Rodrigo and Ezequiel Garay, Castro netted his second in the 92nd minute to dampen the home side's spirits.

Bleacher Report UK noted this as but the latest disappointment for a club that's endured hard times of late in Spain's top flight, with no evidence to suggest it will end anytime soon:

Ayestaran took over the club earlier in 2016 with high hopes of saving their ship, but as ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan pointed out, things certainly don't look good:

The same can't be said of Gijon, however, after they notched their second win of this LaLiga season and extended their unbeaten start to the term after beating Leganes 2-1 at home.

Cases and Cop put the hosts ahead before the break, but Leganes were unable to dodge their first defeat of the new campaign despite Diego Rico firing back in the 58th minute.

A first-half red card for Asier Riesgo didn't prevent Eibar from stealing all three points in their trip to Granada on Sunday, breaking the deadlock through Pedro Leon on the stroke of half-time despite their disadvantage.

Granada finally made the pressure tell and equalised thanks to Artem Kravets with 15 minutes remaining, but it was Enrich who had the last laugh after persevering to win the game 2-1 with the final touch of the game, per Yahoo's Andrew Gaffney:

Granada levelled in the 76th minute and sought the killer blow, with Eibar undoubtedly having grown tired after more than a half of football playing with one man fewer than their opponents.

However, Enrich tore up the script and capitalised on a late counter to dash Granada's dreams, moving his side up to sixth in the standings as a result.

Athletic also jumped up the table ranks on Sunday after Raul Garcia scored the only goal in their clash against Deportivo La Coruna at the Riazor.

Los Leones' win was the only Sunday fixture in which both teams failed to score, with Athletic moving up to 14th with their first win of the season, while Depor's unbeaten run came to a disappointing end at home.
