LaLiga Results 2016 Week 3: Final Scores and Updated Table After Saturday

Tom SunderlandSep 10, 2016

Barcelona were left stunned on Saturday evening as even the powers of their MSN strike force weren't enough to avoid an embarrassing 2-1 defeat at home to La Liga new boys Alaves.

Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez came off the bench to join Neymar in the second half, but Jeremy Mathieu's 46th-minute goal was nothing but a consolation thanks to strikes from Alaves duo Deyverson and Ibai Gomez.

Las Palmas' dream start to the 2016-17 season came to end on Saturday after Sevilla scored twice in the last five minutes to pull off a dramatic 2-1 comeback and strip their opponents of the table lead.

Real Madrid swatted 10-man Osasuna aside with a 5-2 victory earlier in the day, a result that saw them steal the perch outright as a result of Las Palmas' late defeat.

Atletico Madrid also got their season up and running after beating Celta Vigo 4-0 away from home, their maiden LaLiga victory of the 2016-17 campaign, while Villarreal defeated Malaga 2-0 in Andalusia.

Read on for a roundup of Saturday's results, complete with recap of the day's action and the latest table standings.

Recap

Barca were left red-faced at the Camp Nou on Saturday as a much-altered starting XI crumpled under the pressure of Alaves, who netted either side of the break to seal their first win of the league campaign.

Deyverson got on the end of a sensational Kiko Femenia cross to claim a shock lead, and Mathieu headed level just after the break, but Gomez's strike stood out as the pick of the bunch, per Sky Sports La Liga:

Mathieu had an agonising chance to put the Blaugrana ahead just after his initial equaliser, too, and Barcelona were ultimately made to pay for his profligacy:

Paco Alcacer and Arda Turan started alongside Neymar up top, making way for Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta, respectively, while Denis Suarez came off so that Messi could make his incision.

Despite that impact off the bench, however, Alaves frustrated their giant opposition in Catalonia, and manager Mauricio Pellegrino saw his unbeaten start to LaLiga preserved in touch territory.

Cristiano Ronaldo enjoyed a fruitful return to Real Madrid's starting lineup on Saturday and scored the opening goal in their 5-2 hammering of Osasuna to temporarily return to the summit of LaLiga.

Dating back to last season, the result meant Los Merengues equalled a consecutive win record that's stood for more than half a century, as explained by broadcaster Deji Kofi Faremi:

Despite Ronaldo making the initial incision, however, it was the defenders who shone brightest in attack for Real as Danilo, Sergio Ramos and Pepe also got on the scoresheet, along with midfield maestro Luka Modric.

Real have hardly edged their way to clinching that 15-win record, either, and Squawka detailed the decisive manner in which they've gathered form under manager Zinedine Zidane:

Oriol Riera and David Garcia pulled back a pair of consolatory strikes for Osasuna before full-back Tano was handed his marching orders to end any hope of a comeback.

Atletico were similarly impressive en route to their 4-0 rout of Celta Vigo at Balaidos, and WhoScored.com provided evidence of the clinical form in front of goal that supplied their win:

Antoine Griezmann found his feet with a brace in front of Celta's fans, while Koke and Angel Correa also followed in with a goal apiece to fire Los Rojiblancos up into the top four.

Las Palmas had victory in the palm of their hands, and Tana's 16th-minute breakthrough stood for more 70 minutes before Sevilla not only cracked their way into the matchup, but won it outright.

The result was all the more cruel considering Las Palmas got off to such a positive start in the first half, and Tana's sole strike was a memorable way to divide the two teams.

Heartbreak hit home for the guests, though, after Pedro Bigas was shown a red card in the 88th-minute, leaving Pablo Sarabia to equalise from the spot before Carlos Fernandez collected a winner deep in injury time. David Cartlidge of beIN Sports argued it was an unfair result:

Jaume Costa and Nicola Sansone provided the goals for Villarreal as they notched a comfortable 2-0 win at Malaga, with both goals scored before the break.

The Yellow Submarine jumped seven places into sixth spot as a result of their first win of the season, while Malaga remain in search of their first three-point haul.
