Defense wins championships, according to the old sports cliche, but while that might or might not be true, scoring goals is the only way to win games.
Enter the goalscorer, the most glamorous, most famous and often most generously compensated of footballers. FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo are without doubt the two most prolific goalscorers in the world right now, but today the subject is their Premier League counterparts.
Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge scored a hat-trick at the weekend, and that might make him the league’s hottest goalscorer at the moment. But the title of Premier League’s best goalscorer must go to one of two players: Manchester United’s Robin van Persie or Liverpool’s Luis Suarez.
Van Persie leads the Premier League with 25 goals this season and is on course to finish as the division’s top scorer for the second straight season (30 last year with Arsenal). Suarez is two behind but won’t have another chance to play this season due to suspension.
Which one is better? Who is more instinctive? Who has the better first touch? In the clip above, B/R World Football Lead Writers Michael Cummings and Will Tidey discuss the subject. After watching the video, be sure to add your thoughts in the comments below.
