6 "Sleeper" Choices for Head Coach of Jacksonville Jaguars

David LevinDec 26, 2011

Throw out the "names" that have been bantered about as the new head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

While Shahid Khan is preparing to take over the team from Wayne Weaver after the first of the year, there are names floating around sports websites, television channels and through Twitter accounts, all claiming to "possibly" be a choice to lead the Jaguars in 2012.

And none of them are names Mel Tucker.

Could there be a surprise or two who should be considered for the head job in the River City?

Take a look at these potential choices as possible candidates.

6. Chuck Pagano, Defensive Coordinator Baltimore Ravens

1 of 6

Pagano has done a great job with this group.

Remember that middle linebacker Ray Lewis has been injured during the season, the group is a year older and it still beat Pittsburgh twice and controls its own destiny in the AFC North.

They also beat Cincinnati, who is 9-6 in their division and plays them again this coming week.

Pagano has put the defense in contention to claim a Super Bowl title. Now, it is up to the offense to catch up.

5. Scott Linehan, Offensive Coordinator, Detroit Lions

He has made Matthew Stafford a star.

In Linehan's offense, Stafford has thrown for 4,518 yards. He did not fair well in St. Louis as the head man, but given another opportunity in a different surrounding, he could excel.

He would have the NFL's leading rusher in his offense and a quarterback, like Stafford, who needs some fine tuning before he could be great.

4. Todd Haley, Former Kansas City Head Coach

Haley has connections to Jacksonville as a graduate of the University of North Florida and former golf coach at Jacksonville University.

Haley proved he could coach in Kansas City and took the Chiefs to a division title last year.

Could he get another crack at the top slot again.

3. Romeo Crennel, Interim Coach of the Kansas City Chiefs

4 of 6

Crennel was the greatest story in the NFL last week. He also was a head coach in Cleveland with the Browns.

Crennel's personality would be well received in Jacksonville. He was the Chief's defensive coordinator before being named to the head post in Kansas City following Todd Haley's dismissal.

Could Crennel take the head job and retain Mel Tucker as the defensive coordinator?

That could be a very interesting combination in the NFL.

2. Tom Clements, Quarterback Coach of the Green Bay Packers

5 of 6

Clements has made Aaron Rodgers a mega star.

He has been a part of the Packers staff since 2006 and has been instrumental in the high scoring offense Green Bay has put together.

Clements also spent time working under Bill Cowher and Mike Ditka.

Can he work magic with the likes of a Blaine Gabbert?

1. Brian Billick, Current NFL Network Commentator

6 of 6

It sounds like a smoke screen, but Brian Billick said he is too old and too expensive for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

According to helmet2helmet.net, Billick said  he was not interested in the job left open after Jack Del Rio was fired.

Billick coached the Baltimore Ravens from 1999 through 2008, winning a Super Bowl along the way.

Although Billick said he was too expensive for this team, he could still be a candidate since new owner Shahid Khan may try to make a splash with a "big name" hire.
