6 Reasons Why the Patriots Will Win the Super Bowl

Christopher BenvieDec 22, 2011

The Patriots are division champions once again.  No big deal—they've been there, done that.  In fact, they've done that so well they've won nine division titles since 2001.

This is not new territory. The Patriot Way is winning.

Some how, some way, year in and year out, the Patriots are consistently winning games—a lot of them.  This year proves to be no different.  Currently sitting atop the AFC East and two wins away from having home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, the Pats are riding high right now.

Sure, there are question marks on this team.

Sure, they have had their share of playoff losses in the past few years.

And sure, they haven't brought home a Lombardi Trophy since 2004.  But that is all going to change this season.  Here are six reasons why.

The Defense Is Terrible

1 of 6

Wait a second...

How is having a terrible defense actually beneficial to the Patriots winning the Super Bowl?

I know—it seems perplexing, and it is.  Currently they have the league's 32nd-ranked defensive unit with really no signs of improvement.

The loss of Andre Carter against the Broncos was a major hit.

Most of the players out there you or I have never heard of before.

Yet they continue to be just good enough not to lose games.  I can't explain it.  Sort of like a Bigfoot sighting, the Patriots defense just shows up long enough to not give away games.

Early on against the Tebow-lead Broncos, I was sure that the Patriots would allow 300-plus yards on the ground.  They just couldn't stop the run.  Somehow, some way, they got a couple of plays to go their way and held their ground for the remainder of the game.

It happens every week, or so it seems.

I'm not sure how, but this terrible defense, in its own way, is good.

They Score...Alot

2 of 6

In 15 weeks of football, the New England Patriots have scored 437 points.

In the AFC only the .500 (7-7) San Diego Chargers have scored remotely close to that many points with 358.  That is a difference of 79 points.  A lot of things would need to go right for the Chargers to even make the playoffs this season, though they're still in the hunt.

The offense is not now, nor has it ever been the issue.  The Pats have the highest net points (140) in the AFC and have the third-highest overall, behind only Green Bay (183) and New Orleans (151).  Odds are, the Packers will face the Saints at some point in the playoffs, thus eliminating one of the two from Super Bowl consideration.

Tom Brady May Have the Most Weapons He's Ever Had

As of today, Wes Welker is the league's leading receiver with 1,380 yards.  He also has 104 receptions with nine touchdowns and averages 13.3 yards per reception.

Rob Gronkowski is quickly becoming the best tight end in all of football.  As of today, he has amassed 75 receptions with 1,141 yards, averaging 15.2 yards per catch while hauling in 15 touchdowns.  Let's not forget about Gronk's two-yard rushing touchdown, giving him 16 total on the season.

Aaron Hernandez is no slouch either, adding 68 receptions and 736 yards.  His average reception is for 10.8 yards, and he has the team's third-most touchdowns with six.

While the Patriots have no standout stud running back, the trio of BenJarvis Green-Ellis, Danny Woodhead and Stevan Ridley has added 1,257 yards on the ground and 11 touchdowns.

The AFC Is Suspect

4 of 6

Don't get me wrong, I am not naive enough to believe that the Patriots' number could be up at any point during the playoffs.

Teams like the Ravens, Steelers and Jets all concern me.

However, I think the other teams in the AFC will not be able to stop the momentum the Patriots have built over the past several weeks.

The Broncos do not scare me.

The Texans do not scare me.

Ben Roethlisberger is banged up.

I'm not really sure what it is, perhaps just a gut feeling, but the Patriots will match up against any team they face in the playoffs well, and at the end of the day they may allow 35 points to be put up against them. But in turn, I feel that in the event that should happen, the Patriots would score 36.

Saints or Packers

5 of 6

I surmise that around the league the general consensus is that the team representing the NFC in the Super Bowl will likely be the Saints or the Packers.

Personally, I would like to see the Patriots play the Packers.

Both New England and Green Bay are at the bottom of the defensive metric list in regards to yards allowed.

Both teams have explosive offenses.

It is fair to say that with a 13-1 record, the Packers are the best team in football, not just the NFC.  What better measuring stick for the Patriots than the best team in the league?

A quote I'm sure Aaron Rodgers is familiar with:

"To be the man, you gotta beat the man" - Ric Flair (via SB Nation).

If the Pats are going to be the best, then by all accounts they should beat the best to do so.

Tom Brady Is Still the Best QB in the Game

Tom Brady is the best quarterback in football.

Tom Brady may even be the best quarterback of all time.

These aren't opinions, they're facts.

OK, maybe they are opinions, but as far as I'm concerned, as long as the Patriots have No. 12 on the field, there is a significant chance the Patriots are going to win that day.  In fact, there is a .777 percent chance he's going to win that game.

Tom Brady has the best winning percentage of all quarterbacks in the history of the NFL.  I'll take my chances betting on that horse.
