Derrick Rose: Christmas Came Early for This Bulls Fan After MVP Gets Extension
When they put a Derrick Rose Rule in the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) and your name is Derrick Rose, it's not hard to figure out what your contact is going to be. So it's not a shock that Rose is signing a five-year, $94 million max extension, which will be formally announced today at 11:00 a.m. CST.
In the new CBA there was a provision for players that had either won an MVP, been named to start two All-Star games, or been named to two All-NBA teams, allowing them a greater pay raise, capped at 30 percent of the salary cap.
Rose was named the MVP of the league last year and was the impetus of the award, as he made only $5.5 million last year in spite of his "most valuable status."

Sewing up Rose for the next six years (including the year remaining on his current contract) is a huge plus for the Bulls as well. Franchise players like Rose are a rarity and it ensures the Bulls of being a contender for the NBA title for the next half-dozen years.
It also assures the Bulls that they will have their entire starting five, possibly the best starting five in basketball, locked up for the next three seasons.
In an interesting twist, Kevin Durant, not Derrick Rose, will be the first player to take advantage of the Derrick Rose rule. His contract kicks in this year, which means that the salary structure comes on this year's CBA as contractually he's guaranteed the maximum.
For Durant, who has started the last two All-Star games, that means he gets the 30 percent and becomes the first player to take advantage of the Rose Rule.
