Rex Ryan Is the Tim Tebow of NFL Coaches, Not in a Good Way

Richie SmithDec 20, 2011

Bill Belichick, Mike Tomlin, Sean Payton, Mike McCarthy.

Four examples of Super Bowl-winning coaches who run tight organizational ships. Four examples of coaches who never lose control of their teams at any given point. Four coaches who do things the right way.

Rex Ryan does not fall under this umbrella of elite and composed NFL head coaches. The New York Jets leader, who seems to be more focused on being known around the league as the "Wise Guy," continuously gets in trouble with his words to the media.  He has even had confrontational run-ins with fans, for which he was fined by the NFL.

However, despite these controversies with the public and even with some of his own players and coaches, the third-year head coach has found some success early on in his coaching career, including two consecutive trips to the AFC Championship game.

But how long can Ryan's off-the-field antics, calling out of players, and empty Super Bowl predictions last? Eventually, it will be too much for Jets ownership and fans to tolerate. And I think it will be sooner rather than later.

Super Bowls are won when coaches don't create a circus around a team.  When a coach is the center of attention, a team will never win a Super Bowl. Rex Ryan has yet to learn this as an NFL head coach.

To me, this begs the comparison to Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow, who has begun his career with winning in the most unconventional of ways. Just like Ryan, Tebow finds ways to win, while being one of the most polarizing figures in the league.

But one has to wonder how much longer the Broncos can win on crazy fourth-quarter comebacks and capitalizing on other teams' mental miscues?

No "running quarterback" has ever won a Super Bowl. Let's be honest, Tebow struggles to get the ball 15 yards down the field and takes off scrambling after his first read.

The Miami Dolphins thought they had beaten the system in 2008, when they instituted the 'Wild Cat" offense on the way to a AFC East title. That lasted about 12 minutes.

We should also probably mention that some guy named Tom Brady did not play that year due to a torn ACL suffered in the first game of the season.

While both Ryan and Tebow have won games by going against the grain, they are not in great positions to sustain long-term success in the NFL.
