Lakers Rumors: Gilbert Arenas Experiment Would Be a Disaster in Los Angeles

Justin WeltonDec 18, 2011

It’s been a crazy offseason for the Los Angeles Lakers. First they miss out on the Chris Paul sweepstakes. Then they trade away Lamar Odom, the best sixth man player in the NBA

Now they are weighing the option of bringing in Gilbert Arenas, the former 3-time NBA All-Star who is from Los Angeles. It would be an absolute disaster if they decided to bring the 10-year veteran to town this season.

How desperate will it look if the Lakers decide to pull the strings to acquire Arenas? I was always a fan of Los Angeles sticking with their roster while adding one or two role players, but they blew that up with the trade of Odom for draft picks. Yes, draft picks were given up from a team that won two of the past three NBA Championships.

Unreal.

It’s not like Arenas is playing like his golden days of 2005-06 when he averaged 29.3 points per game.

Arenas had his glorious opportunity to prove that he’s capable of playing basketball at a high level on a great team last year in Orlando. He failed miserably. Arenas shot 34 percent from the floor en route to eight points per game in 22 minutes a night.

He is known for his ability to shoot the rock, but that wasn’t the case last season as he shot 28 percent from beyond the arc for the Magic

That’s not going to get it done for the Los Angeles this season. Los Angeles needs a more reliable shooter from the perimeter. Shooting 28 percent would be equivalent to bringing in another Matt Barnes but slightly worse.

Arenas is injury prone as well so there isn’t a guarantee of him being on the floor every night. He has only played in all 82 games once in his career and that was way back in 2002-03.

Another reason to look over Arenas is because of his past troubles with firearms inside of a Washington Wizards’ locker room.

Why bring in Arenas who failed to play at a high level in Orlando? He’s only 29 years of age so it’s not like his skills should be completely shot, but his inability to succeed on a quality team should send you just one of several red flags.

Arenas joining the Lakers would be a disaster for Los Angeles. There are several other players that I would take over Arenas at this point including a guy like James Posey, who is 34 years old.

Los Angeles shouldn’t even consider bringing in Arenas at this point in his career. This isn’t the mid-2000s.
