Celtics Rumors: Rajon Rondo Shows Immaturity with Outburst from the NBA Playoffs
No matter how we much idolize athletes of any sport, we still have to recognize that they are humans like you and me, except that they were blessed with an overactive pituitary gland and were given the gift of playing basketball.
It doesn't matter if Michael Jordan thinks he's better than everyone else on this planet, because in the end, he's judged a human being and nothing more.
That includes Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo, who is still your average 25-year-old that's just getting into the swing of things in this obstacle called life. He's considered an adult because of his age, but that doesn't mean he has to act like it.
He proved that after recent developments came out about what he did during a session with the team when they were going over tapes.
In between Games 2 and 3 of the second round, when the Celtics were facing a 2-0 deficit to the Miami Heat heading into Boston, Rondo was allegedly criticized by the assistant coaches for a few errors during the past few games. The point guard reacted and defended himself before head coach Doc Rivers intervened. It was at that point that Rondo allegedly threw a water bottle at and shattered the video screen.
Suddenly, that whole trading Rondo business makes a whole lot more sense. I stated before that these athletes are humans just like you and me and still possess the same emotions as us, but this is a great deal of immaturity from the floor general of a championship-bound team.
Rondo has done plenty in the past to show off his immaturity, but this is extremely uncharacteristic of a player who holds himself very well on the court.
It's understandable that a player like Rondo would be frustrated in that situation since he has always been used to success. Being down two games to none in a series was a new thing, but having an outburst like that could easily cause a rift between you, your teammates and your coaches, who are only there to propel you to the next level.
If you're down 2-0 in a significant series against a team that has plenty of talent to beat you, unity and chemistry is the one thing you have on your side. The Celtics pride themselves on their chemistry as it has made up for the core's age and continues to aid them as a championship contenders, despite having a relatively old three-man core.
The Celtics would ultimately go on to win the next game, but would lose the series 4-1 as Rondo would suffer an injury to his left arm in Game 3.
Rondo was only 21 years old when he became the starting point guard for a Celtics team that was set to feature Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce. The Big Three would do the majority of the work on their way to a title, but Rondo would steal the show and garner respect around the league for his ability to show such maturity at such a young age while playing alongside three future Hall of Famers.
For those that want to say Rondo's only good because of the team he was handed, don't be so quick to make that assumption. Mario Chalmers is in the exact same boat in Miami and he lost a starting job last season because of his inconsistencies while playing with a Big Three that was arguably better than the Celtics' Big Three of 2008.
This development not only directly prompted the Celtics front office to attempt to trade their All-Star point guard, but it's also going to make other teams shy away from obtaining Rondo. Even though he has become one of the league's top offensive facilitators, organizations will always think twice about bringing a problematic player that could possibly disrupt team chemistry.
Displaying that chemistry off the court is just as important as it is on the court. On a team with three veterans who have been through and seen it all in a combined 44 years of experience on the court, this may be the first time that they've seen a player have such an outburst.
A team like Boston needs its chemistry to continue thriving in the NBA, and there is now no doubt why the Celtics were one of the first teams to show up in trade rumors with Rondo being offered to the Hornets in return for Chris Paul.
The Celtics now have no plans on trading away Rondo, especially with the Big Three set to retire within the next few seasons, but a trade is still highly possible if this immaturity persists.
