Toronto Blue Jays Posting Process: The Yu Darvish Decision

Stephen BrownDec 14, 2011

Today is the day that we find out which team made the highest bid for Yu Darvish’s (henceforth to be called the Yu) rights. Teams have until 5:00 p.m. today to make a posting bid for the Japanese phenom.

I believe that this decision will have a very large impact on the offseason strategy of many different teams. Perhaps if one team was trying to acquire the Yu's rights and failed, then they might make a big-time play for Prince Fielder and spend their money in another way.

This posting decision will impact the rest of the offseason and although the Yu himself believes it is an unfair process, it will still go down today.

Now who are the main players? By default we must talk about the big two first:

New York Yankees

1 of 8

The Yankees are said to not be a main contender for the Yu’s services. After being burned by Kei Igawa ($26 million posting fee: 5-year $20 million contract) who pitched in just 16 games, the Yankees have sore feelings about this posting process. Perhaps if they move A.J. Burnett before the posting process, that could open up some funds?

Boston Red Sox

2 of 8

The Red Sox aren’t thought to be big players in this decision. According to espn.com, Sox GM Ben Cherington indicated that they would not participate in the Yu’s posting process.

The Main Conteders: Texas Rangers

3 of 8

Probably the biggest threat to the Jays landing the Yu. After losing ace C.J Wilson to their divisional rival the Angels, the Rangers do need to replenish their pitching arsenal and the Yu could be the guy.

They have scouted him as much (if not more than the Blue Jays) and many believe they will make an aggressive posting bid for his services. Hopefully the addition of Neftali Feliz to the rotation will slow down any huge Yu bid.

Another team that has been quiet this offseason are perhaps waiting to strike on the Yu. They would have an outstanding young staff with the likes of Zimmerman and of course Stephen Strasburg. Perhaps they would be more prudent paying to improve other parts of their team? I don’t expect them to win this process but you never know.

Other Possibilities: Chicago Cubs

Epstein would love to have a quality top notch starter to help rebuild his team, but I personally believe it is too risky a play for him. If Yu flops, then he would be known for making that gaffe and I don’t think Epstein is ready to put his whole Cubs legacy in the hands of the Yu.

Miami Marlins

6 of 8

Although they have already broke the bank, you never know with Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria.

Seattle Mariners

7 of 8

With a huge Japanese following after the success that Ichiro has brought their franchise in branding and merchandise, it would be prudent for them to make a push for the Yu. Although they already have a dynamic young duo in Felix and Pineda, if they added the Yu, their pitching could rival the Phils.

The Hope: Toronto Blue Jays

8 of 8

As I have discussed in length here, I believe the Blue Jays could really use the Yu from a branding perspective and a baseball perspective. They are a main contender for the Yu sweepstakes and have scouted him on many occasions. They have yet to make a big splash with their new found money, so don't be surprised to see a big bid.

The Yu would receive continental recognition and the Blue Jays would be put on the map for many American fans. I am not going to go in detail again (click here to read my previous piece on the Yu) but let’s just say I hope they go for broke and post a big fee.

We will soon know the truth about the Yu, and when we do… I will discuss its impact.
