Vince Carter to the Mavericks: "Vinsanity" Reunited with Jason Kidd in Big D
Although Vince Carter has not technically signed with the Dallas Mavericks yet, ESPN Dallas says that he and Lamar Odom are expected to be signed and at practice on Tuesday.
Carter watched practice today, and will supposedly sign within the day, once he has officially cleared waivers.
According to The Boston Herald, "The Suns waived Carter on Friday within a 72-hour window that allows them to pay only $4 million of the $18 million he’s owed for 2011-12."
With the acquisition of Carter, Dallas adds another crafty veteran to a team already stocked full of them. Known around the league as an outstanding scorer, he is coming off of a career-low scoring season in Phoenix, where he averaged only 13.5 points per game in 51 games.
Still, Carter's career scoring average is around 22 points per game. His best years coming in his five-season stint with the New Jersey Nets, where he averaged in the mid-20s in scoring and made three All-Star game appearances.
The point guard running the show during Carter's time in New Jersey was future Hall of Famer Jason Kidd, now the starting floor general in Dallas.
The Kidd-Carter tandem put up terrific numbers together. In a game against the Washington Wizards in 2007, Kidd and Carter became the first teammates in 18 years to both achieve a triple-double in the same game, following in the footsteps of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.
The Nets also made the playoffs in all four seasons that Kidd were together.
Kidd put up ridiculous assist numbers with the Nets, many of which went to Carter. During the 2006-07 season, Carter became the first Net in history to score 2,000 points in a season. The two men were also teammates in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. In a game against France, Carter delivered one of the most awe-inspiring dunks in basketball history, leaping completely over the head of 7'2'' French center Frederic Weis. Kidd said afterwards that it was one of the best plays he'd ever seen.
Known as "Air Canada" in his days with the Toronto Raptors, Carter was the 2000 NBA Slam-Dunk Contest champion. ESPN's Chris Broussard and the great Indiana Pacer Reggie Miller both dubbed Carter as the greatest dunker of all time.
Carter may not be quite as athletic now after a few past knee issues, but Dallas fans can still expect to see a few spectacular slams him this season.
Although "Vinsanity" is now 34 years old and Kidd is 39, the two can still work well together for the Dallas Mavericks. With Dirk Nowitzki on the team, neither of the two need to try to be the star players they were for the Nets.
Also, the shooting guard position is extremely deep for the Mavs. With Jason Terry, Corey Brewer, Rudy Fernandez and Rodrigue Beaubois coming off the bench, Dallas will happily take 13 points per game from Carter.
This year's Maverick team gives Carter the best chance to win a championship that he has ever had. But if he wants to win one alongside his old pal Jason Kidd, he needs to put everything he has into this season, because it is very likely to be Kidd's last.
