NBA Trade Rumors: Chris Paul for Stephen Curry, Does This Deal Make Sense?
Golden State Warriors beat writer for the San Jose Mercury News Tim Kawakami tweets, "Multiple NBA sources: If the Hornets consider trading Chris Paul, one player they really like is Stephen Curry & have told GSWs that."
This brings up the question, does it make sense?
The answer depends on who you're talking about. It certainly makes sense to the New Orleans Hornets who are not on the top of any free agent's wish list.
Getting Curry would ensure the Hornets of having a player under contract for several more years. Curry has two years left on his present contract and then he would be a restricted free agent whose contract they could match.
He's an exciting young player, and since he's a point guard they wouldn't have to find a replacement. Plus, he is a scorer and a passer, unlike Rajon Rondo, who is a great distributor but not much of a scorer.
For the Warriors, it makes a lot of sense. How is not having Chris Paul on your team in any way not sensible?
The question the Warriors would face is the question every team not named the Knicks faces—can they get Chris Paul to extend? With Monta Ellis, David Lee and Dorell Wright they have some interesting pieces, but with Paul having no connections to the West Coast it's doubtful he would extend.
Without Paul extending, there's reason to doubt that he would extend unless there's a championship level team to step into.
What we do get from this news is an idea of what the Hornets are looking for in exchange for Paul, a young player they can build around, and that's something the Knicks don't have to offer.
