Saints vs. Lions: Drew Brees and Co. on Collision Course to Rematch with Packers

Eric BallDec 5, 2011

The New Orleans Saints keep churning out business-like victories on a weekly basis and that's just fine with them.

As the Green Bay Packers stay on the front page of the sports section attempting to go undefeated, the Saints are on the back page quietly humming along. They are now the proud owners of a four-game win streak.

Sunday night's 31-17 win over the Detroit Lions was the latest example. The offense may have been on the sidelines for 11 more minutes than the Lions, but QB Drew Brees still completed 26-of-36 passes for 342 yards and three TDs.

He was making all the throws necessary of a winning QB and spread the wealth to six receivers that are all incredibly deadly. Robert Meachem, Marques Colston, Lance Moore and Jimmy Graham are all No. 2 receivers. It's such a luxury to have all four of them.

The Lions have plenty of talent on both sides of the ball, but they lack the discipline and experience of the Saints. Detroit committed one dumb penalty after another and New Orleans was more than willing to take advantage of all the extra yardage. The Saints were clearly the more poised team on Sunday. This is a team that knows how to win, and they know how to do it together.

The running game isn't spectacular, but just like their receivers, they have incredible depth with Pierre Thomas, Darren Sproles and Mark Ingram. On Sunday it was Ingram who emerged with the bulk of the carries (16) and a touchdown. If he continues improve as the playoffs approach, the Saints will posses more balance than even the Packers.

During their four-game win streak, the defense has stepped up in a big way, allowing only 20 points a game. Pretty incredible considering they went up against potent offenses in the Atlanta Falcons, New York Giants and the Lions.

The rush defense is suffocating in the trenches and the secondary is beginning to create more turnovers. Remember, it was their opportunistic defense that propelled them to a Super Bowl two years ago.

With road games at Tennessee and Minnesota on deck before home contests against Atlanta and Carolina...13-3 and the first round bye is a very real possibility.

We all know the Packers are the best team in the NFL but I think the only team that can truly give them a run for their money is the one that was a goal-line stuff and two-point conversion away from destroying their undefeated streak before it even started.

Keep sleeping on the Saints and focus on Green Bay...it's exactly what New Orleans wants you to do.
