Chicago Bulls: How Their Roster Looks Now and How It Could Change by First Game
The Chicago Bulls' roster doesn't look to be in for a major overhaul, but then again, why would it be considering last seasons' success? Even though, I do believe a trade for Dwight Howard is worth the overhaul, but in reality that won't happen.
The Bulls will only have one new starter, and by my estimation, three new reserves, when you count rookie Jimmy Butler (when he signs).
As of now, the Bulls have the following players under contract:
C.J. Watson
Keith Bogans - team option
Kyle Korver
Ronnie Brewer
Jimmy Butler
Luol Deng
Taj Gibson
Carlos Boozer
Joakim Noah
Omer Asik
If the Bulls decline the team option on Bogans, which I suspect they will do, that would mean that they have to move one player, likely in a smaller trade to add three players.
That player would most likely be Kyle Korver, the team's worst defender and somewhat disappointing three-point shooter, especially in the clutch.
He would have to be moved for a draft pick or cash to clear the roster spot.
As of now, the Bulls should be able to retain the services of Kurt Thomas. The New York Knicks and other teams have expressed interest, but it seems the desire to bring Thomas back to Chicago is mutual. If he works with the Bulls a bit on the salary, the deal should get done.
That leaves two remaining spots, Bulls fans may not be happy with my predictions, but I believe those spots will be filled by Tracy McGrady and Grant Hill. Their deals could be similar to the ones signed by Bogans, Brewer and Korver last year.
McGrady's deal would probably be for the veteran minimum, while Hill's could be for two years for near the mid-level exception.
That would make the Bulls depth chart as follows:
Starters
PG - Rose
SG - Brewer
SF - Deng
PF - Boozer
C - Noah
Bench
PG - Watson
SG - McGrady
SG/SF - Butler
SF - Hill
PF - Gibson
C - Asik
C - Thomas
I know you may be thinking, how did they address the shooting guard spot? Unfortunately, I think we all may be asking that question come Christmas Day.
The hopes that McGrady can become the starter over time is unrealistic, but I don't see the Bulls really extending themselves to pay the likes of Arron Afflalo, Jason Richardson or even signing Richard Hamilton, as I once thought would be the case.
This roster is still formidable, but not enough to beat Miami. If this pans out, it will be a bummer for fans anticipating a bigger offseason splash.
