New NBA Rumors on Kings' Jonathan Kuminga Trade Talks, Victor Oladipo, Domantas Sabonis' Future

As the Sacramento Kings plot out their long-term direction with Darius Acuff Jr. poised to become a central figure after being selected No. 7 overall in the 2026 NBA draft, there are several moves being considered by the front office right now.

Per ESPN's Anthony Slater, while the Kings do maintain interest in acquiring Jonathan Kuminga, they are "hesitant" about doing so in a sign-and-trade because such a move would hard-cap them at the first apron.

Kuminga is the highest-profile unrestricted free agent still available with no indication he is close to finding a new team. His most recent club, the Atlanta Hawks, can only offer him a minimum deal and their talks have "gone nowhere," per Slater.

While the Kings are looking at Kuminga, Slater noted they have had discussions with Victor Oladipo about filling their open roster spot. They are also considering bringing back Russell Westbrook as they look for more backcourt depth.

Oladipo hasn't played in the NBA since the 2022-23 season with the Miami Heat. He appeared in 15 games with the Wisconsin Herd in the G League last season.

Perhaps the most notable current player for the Kings is Domantas Sabonis, though Slater's report mentions they did try dealing the three-time All-Star to the Detroit Pistons in a sign-and-trade for Jalen Duren last month.

According to Slater, the Pistons turned down the offer. Sabonis is coming off a down 2025-26 season in which he only played 19 games due to a torn meniscus and the roster has been overhauled significantly since their playoff appearance in 2023.

However, Slater noted Sabonis has "expressed a willingness to recommit and buy-in" to the 2026-27 Kings as he looks to rebuild his value. The 30-year-old is owed $94 million over the next two seasons on his current contract, so there probably isn't a robust market for him right now.

In the three seasons prior to 2025-26, Sabonis averaged 19.2 points, 13.3 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game. He will probably not be as central to the offense with Acuff running point and needing to develop his game, but the Kings will need him to help create points as they try to get back to respectability in the Western Conference.

Since ending their playoff drought with 48 wins during the 2022-23 season, the Kings have the ninth-worst record in the NBA over the past three years. Their 22 wins last season was their fewest in an 82-game season since 2008-09.
