Miami Heat Rumors: 3 Potential Additions That Could Put Dream Team Over Top

Tim DanielsNov 29, 2011

Even though the Miami Heat didn't win last season's NBA Championship, it's clear the Dream Team isn't more than one or two pieces away from reaching its ultimate goal. A couple of depth additions is all it would really take.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel did a roundup of all the players (nine in total) linked to the Heat since a labor agreement was reached. Here are three attainable options from that list which could put Miami over the top next summer.

Samuel Dalembert

Miami lacked a center who could make significant contributions last season, which reared it's ugly head most often on the defensive end. Chris Bosh isn't a terrible defender, but he isn't exactly Ben Wallace either. So somebody who can guard the paint to play alongside him should be the top priority.

Dalembert fits that description perfectly. The veteran can be penciled in for eight points, eight rebounds and two blocks virtually every season and has shown tremendous durability for a big man. Those stats might not jump off the page at you, but they're exactly what Miami needs.

Since the Heat will probably lack enough cap space to make a legitimate run at Tyson Chandler or Nene, Dalembert is a capable backup option.

Shane Battier

Battier was the driving force behind the Memphis Grizzles' playoff run in which they knocked off the San Antonio Spurs. While Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol did most of the heavy lifting, Battier's leadership and timely big shots made the upset possible.

The best part for Battier is that those skills translate to any team, so he should have a fair share of suitors once free agency opens. Including the Heat, who became stagnant and played a lot of one-on-one basketball last season. An on-court leader like the Duke product would add more fluidity to their offense.

Since Miami won't have as much money to offer as other teams, it will have to use the allure of a possible championship to reel in Battier.

Caron Butler

After spending the first two seasons of his career with Miami, Butler has made stops in Los Angeles, Washington and Dallas. He's battled injuries, which could decrease his value enough to make him be within the Heat's price range.

He might not have the same athleticism he possessed coming out of Connecticut, but he can still knock down shots as illustrated by his career-high shooting percentage from downtown last season. Even Miami can never have enough shooters.

The Heat overworked LeBron James and Dwayne Wade at times last season. Butler would provide those guys with more relief, especially down the stretch when Miami has already locked up a playoff spot.
