Deron Williams to the Magic: Guide to How the Move Would Work

Ethan NorofNov 23, 2011

The Orlando Magic would hit a home run with the acquisition of Deron Williams.

This is a roster that needs a radical transformation to have success in the future, and with Dwight Howard headed for free agency in 2012, the overhaul is going to have be done in dramatic fashion.

Williams doesn't seem sold on his long-term future with the Nets, and the Magic have a serious opportunity to upgrade the point guard position in a very big way.

With the proposed amnesty clause and stretch exception forthcoming in a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, Orlando could have a plethora of money suddenly available to spend big on some very intriguing free agents.

There's little doubt that a potential pairing of Howard and Williams would really excel, and if the club could add one more sizable contributor to the fold, Orlando is going to be a serious threat in the Eastern Conference.

With Boston still a presence and New York, Miami nor Chicago going anywhere anytime soon, Orlando needs to greatly improve the talent of the team in an effort to remain competitive.

How It Could Happen: Trade

1 of 4

The Magic need to find a way to keep Howard in the fold long-term, and Williams would be an excellent step in doing exactly that.

Howard has already said that he wants to see changes to the roster, and there may not be a more impressive change than an upgrade at point guard than adding Williams over Jameer Nelson.

In an interview in Russia, Howard listed Williams as one player who he would like to play with, fueling speculation that Howard sought for his current team to deal for the skilled guard.

There would need to be a season in an effort to concoct this deal, as both men are free agents in 2012, and it's imperative that the Magic explore every option in an effort to keep Howard in Orlando.

If the team uses the amnesty provision to cut Gilbert Arenas and the "stretch exception" to waive Hedo Turkoglu, the Magic will have a ton of money available and could be able to afford both superstars.

Potential Trade: Three-team deal.

Orlando Receives: PG Deron Williams

The Magic get their man and a long-term compliment to Dwight Howard.

New Jersey Receives: PG Jameer Nelson, PF Tyrus Thomas, two future first round picks from Orlando, future second round pick from Charlotte.

The Nets get Nelson to bridge the gap at the point guard position, while Thomas represents a possible long-term solution at power forward position. The future draft selections helps the Nets rebuild as the team moves to Brooklyn and into the Barclays Center.

Charlotte Receives: SG J.J. Redick, PF Brandon Bass

The Bobcats get a sniper for a sixth man in Redick, and Bass can instantly serve as either the starter at power forward or backup Boris Diaw at the position.

Most importantly for this small-market club, it gets out of the long-term commitment and sizable chunk of change owed to Thomas.

How It Could Happen: Signing

2 of 4

Assuming that both Williams and Howard hit free agency, there's no question that almost every team with cap space will be scrambling to land both players.

If Orlando could sign both in the same offseason, it would be one of the largest coup's in recent free agent history.

The Magic could very well have a ton of money available, potentially even enough to fit two maximum contracts under the salary cap, and that would bring the team to the forefront of the conversation when it comes to teams capable of competing for a title.

There's no doubt it would be easier to facilitate a trade in order to bring Williams to the Magic, but a signing could also work for Orlando even if Howard doesn't return.

Adding Williams would give the Magic enough appeal to entice other free agents to take their talents to the team, and if 2012 winds up being the free agent frenzy that it very well could be, there's plenty of talent to be had on the market.

How Williams Fits with the Magic

3 of 4

If the Magic can obtain Williams with Howard still on the roster, he's an excellent fit for the team.

Should the Magic sign the point guard without Howard on the roster, the exact fit is to be determined.

Howard dominates the lane, but the addition of Williams would allow the team to run a nearly unstoppable pick n' roll game with the two superstars.

The opposition would have an unbelievably tough time defending the attack, and it would give the Magic an in-game element in the offense that the team has been lacking for a while.

If Orlando commits to Williams without Howard, the team will have to sign other players who can mesh well alongside the skilled point guard, but that really shouldn't be difficult considering his elite skill set.

He makes those he plays alongside with better, and his ability to find his teammates in a variety of areas on the court should mesh well with a club that likes to shoot the deep ball.

Chances of Magic Winning a Championship with Williams

4 of 4

Can the Magic snag a title with Williams?

Well, that answer is highly dependent on whether or not Howard is also on the team.

It's tough to speculate on the chances of a Magic team led by Williams (and without Howard) winning a title without knowing the rest of the personnel on the team.

However, with both Howard and Williams, the Magic become serious players for the title despite a crowded Eastern Conference, and the stock arrow would be pointing firmly in the up direction if both players are suited up in the same uniform.

The idea of the two perennial All-Stars playing with each other is salivating, and it would give Magic fans something to cheer about in a very, very big way.
