What's At Stake?
The Bills were feeling good about themselves after knocking off the New England Patriots in Week 3. However, they have gone 2-4 since that game and are watching their playoff hopes slip away. If Buffalo loses to Miami, the city can start preparing for another season without playoff football.
Miami's playoff hopes are long gone, but they have done a nice job of playing hard anyway. It's a strong quarterback class so, even though they'll likely miss out on Andrew Luck, a solid prospect should still be available. The Dolphins will have also let their current youngsters gain valuable experience.
Bills Injury Report
LB Chris White (out, knee), K Rian Lindell (out, shoulder) WR Stevie Johnson (questionable, shoulder), DB George Wilson (questionable, shoulder), LB Chris Kelsay (questionable, calf)
Dolphins Injury Report
DB Nolan Carroll (questionable, hamstring)
Fantasy Start 'Em, Sit 'Em and Sleeper
Start 'Em: RB Fred Jackson (BUF) – Jackson has scored nine points in each of the last two weeks, which isn't terrible, but they were his first games below 10 all season. Don't be scared away by Miami's strong run defense because the Coe College product will still get his touches.
Sit 'Em: QB Matt Moore (MIA) – Moore would seem like a nice fill-in option since Buffalo's pass defense has struggled mightily in recent weeks. However, it's hard to trust somebody who has scored more than nine points just once all season. Look elsewhere for a replacement option.
Sleeper: Scott Chandler (BUF) – Chandler is a boom-or-bust alternative at a weak tight end position. He's targeted a lot in the red zone as evidenced by his six touchdowns, but he doesn't make a ton of catches otherwise. He's worth the risk against a Miami defense that ranks 23rd against opposing TEs.
What They're Saying
Jay Skurski of the Buffalo News takes a look at the Bills' ongoing woes on third down. It's not an isolated, one-year problem for the Bills but rather something that's plagued the team during its entire playoff drought.
"Since [2002], third down has been a source of frustration for the team and its fans. The Bills haven't finished in the top half of the league in the last eight seasons, including a 32nd-place finish in 2009, and haven't once cracked the 40-percent conversion rate in that time.
"
The Miami Herald's Armando Salguero examines the Dolphins' repeated slow starts in recent seasons. In a league with a season as short as the NFL's, getting out of the gate sluggish often dooms an entire team's year. So they need to find a remedy before 2012.
"Consider that since the Parcells-Ireland-Sparano administration took over, the Dolphins have a 3-9 record in September in four seasons. They have a 6-9 record in October in four season. And when November hits, stuff finally clicks and they're a very competitive 18-12 through the end of the season.
"
Bills Player to Watch: WR David Nelson
Anybody who hadn't heard of Nelson prior to last week got their fair share of him on Sunday after he gave a touchdown ball to his Dallas Cowboys cheerleader girlfriend. People in Buffalo have watched him progress into a reliable No. 2 receiver who has made several big catches.
Dolphins Player to Watch: RB Reggie Bush
Bush has enjoyed a career resurgence, running for 242 yards and three touchdowns over the past three weeks. Daniel Thomas' injury opened the door for Bush to get more touches, and he's proven worthy of carrying the load, at least for now.
Key Matchup: Dolphins pass rush vs. Bills offensive line
Buffalo has suffered several injuries along their front five, including center Eric Wood, who was lost for the season against Dallas. The Dolphins rank 10th in sacks and will need to get pressure on Ryan Fitzpatrick to slow down the Bills offense.
On the Hot Seat: Bills K Dave Rayner
A kicker on the hot seat? Yes. Rayner filled in for the injured Rian Lindell last week and missed his only field goal attempt. With Lindell facing an uncertain timetable, Rayner will get one more chance to prove his worth to the coaching staff before they look elsewhere.
Prediction: Dolphins 21, Bills 20
