Big East Expansion: TCU Showed Why Boise State Is Better off Avoiding Big East
As we all know, the Big East conference is trying to expand since Pittsburgh and Syracuse are leaving for the ACC. The West Virginia Mountaineers are also leaving for the Big 12 eventually, but they may end up having to stay a couple more years.
In order to make the Big East conference work, it has sent out invitations to other teams hoping to lure them over to the Big East. A few of those teams include Air Force, SMU, Houston and Boise State.
A lot of teams sound like a great fit for the conference and would really help the Big East get back on their feet. However, last week TCU helped show the Boise State Broncos that they should just stay where they are.
This is the second year in a row that Boise State has lost on a last-second field goal to kill its national championship hopes. This will also kill any chance of reaching a BCS bowl for the second year in a row.
Both losses have come against teams they are more talented and more experienced than.
The main reason the Broncos were willing to possibly leave for the Big East was a chance to lock up a BCS bid. This team has had the chance to do so the last two seasons with schedules full of cupcakes and has failed to do so.
What makes the whole situation worse is this is probably the best team Boise will have for a while. After this season Kellen Moore and Doug Martin are gone. The entire offensive line is gone, as well as the majority of the defense. This whole team is made up of juniors and seniors.
Then you look at the merger of the Mountain West and Conference USA, and it appears the Broncos will have all the competition they need in that super conference, including up-and-coming teams like Houston and Central Florida. East Carolina is not a team to sneeze at either.
It's just hard to see Boise leaving a weak conference for another to make a BCS bid when it has trouble doing so in the MWC already.
Boise had two chances to accomplish what it wanted to leave the Big East for, and it came up short both times.
Joining the Big East won't be any better.
