FBS Committee Proposes Changes to Transfer Portal Window, Timeline Revealed
The Division I Football Oversight Committee recently introduced a proposal that included several changes to the college football calendar.
The proposed updates include the transfer portal window being reduced from 15 days to 10 days while the portal would open on the first business day following Jan. 1 each year, via ESPN's Adam Rittenberg.
If approved, the change would be implemented for the 2027 season.
The proposal also allows for two out-of-season practice sessions and the reduction of preseason practices that can be held in the span of 27 days from 25 to 21 (h/t Rittenberg).
College football transfer portal windows have already been changed, as the 2026 portal was open from Jan. 2 through Jan. 16. Athletes were previously permitted to to initiate notification of their intention to enter the portal during a winter transfer window in December as well as a spring transfer window in April.
The latest proposed changes will undergo a final oversight committee vote in August.
