Rex Grossman: Washington Redskins' Desperation Won't Lead to More Victories

Adam WellsNov 13, 2011

The Washington Redskins have fallen on hard times since starting the season 3-1. They have lost four straight games, and to make matters worse, they are going to make another quarterback change. Rex Grossman, who started the first five games, will get the nod against the Miami Dolphins

The team was informed of the move by head coach Mike Shanahan, according to Jason La Canfora of NFL.com.

What does it say about the state of the Redskins when Grossman is the safest quarterback option that they have?

It has become clear that there is no direction or guidance within the Redskins front office and locker room. The decisions that have been made over the last decade have set this franchise back for a long time.

Despite a few fluke victories early in the season, the Redskins are clearly one of the worst teams in the NFL. There is some talent on the defensive side of the ball, like Ryan Kerrigan and Brian Orakpo, but the offense is so bad that the defense can't catch its breath on the sidelines before coming back out.

In his five starts this season, Grossman's numbers are very Rex Grossman-esque. He had 1,132 yards, six touchdowns, nine interceptions, a completion percentage of 55.8 and a quarterback rating of 66.5.

John Beck, the quarterback Grossman is replacing, actually had better numbers in three starts. He completed over 60 percent of his passes and had 858 yards. He only had two touchdowns compared to four interceptions, but he was a bit more efficient with his throws.

Things are getting dire in Washington, which is sad to see.

Even Shanahan, who is one of the most innovative offensive minds in NFL history, can't work his magic with this team because there is only so much you can do with a minimum amount of talent.

The Redskins need to tear the whole team down and start from scratch because the way that they are built right now is not going to bring any kind of success soon. They have, by far, the worst collection of talent at the skill positions in the NFL.

Aside from Fred Davis and Roy Helu, there is not one player at any of the offensive skill positions that would be a starter on a playoff team. (I know Jabar Gaffney was a starter with the Patriots in 2006, but they had Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, too.)

I don't know what bringing Grossman back into the starting lineup does for this team, or is supposed to do, but it is clear that there is no answer to the Redskins' problems right now. They will continue to sink deeper into the abyss, which is a shame, because they have one of the best fan bases in all of sports.
