NFL Power Rankings: How High Has Eli Manning Taken the New York Giants?

Rob BeloteNov 10, 2011

Nine weeks have passed in the NFL season, and it's time for me to bring my craziness here for you all to rip apart. Each week the contributors at GuysNation get together and talk NFL. I take notes, I factor in what my perspective is, and then I formulate NFL Power Rankings. Are they perfect? I like to think so, but I like to have people tear apart my logic. I take constructive criticism, and I can change my opinion accordingly if people make enough sense.

Power Rankings are complicated things...or at least when I over-think them and take into account the margin of victory, where the game was played, team momentums and, in some cases, how teams perform in the fourth quarter.

So where, oh where, do the co-habitants of the New York NFL stadium rank?

Seriously, a side-note: how lame is it that they don't have their own stadium?

Okay, tangent over.

With a record of 6-2, the New York Giants have a decent record, but how about their résumé?

Let's look:

Week 1, they lost to the lowly Washington Redskins—by double-digits. Sure, it was IN Washington (technically Maryland, but most out-of-towners don't know that, and New Yorkers shouldn't throw that sort of stone...Jersey...) But that's before the Redskins got all injury-y and it's not really a big deal if a team loses a road game within their division.

They hosted the Rams in Week 2, and as they should, the Giants beat St Louis. If they hadn't, they'd be a really weak six-win team.

Week 3's victory in Philly was good. Sure, it was by slightly less than two touchdowns, but a division road win is a good thing.

Now comes to the part where people are going to think I'm being picky, but I'll go there anyway: a win, albeit IN Arizona, by ONLY FOUR POINTS against the lowly Cardinals? Are you serious? That's a blemish. A "win blemish", but it still looks bad.

Never fear, they followed it up with a crappy game against the Seahawks.

Seriously, how do you lose to Seattle by DOUBLE DIGITS when you make the Seahawks travel across country, and they beat you by 11?! That's just as bad as the Arizona win...probably worse.

Then Week 6 got the Giants a win over the Bills—by three. At the Giants' home (shared) stadium. On a neutral field, that seems like a tie to me...but given how they're playing this year, a tie against the Bills isn't a bad thing.

Only beating Miami in week eight by three points? That's bad. The fact that it was also a home game for the Giants was also bad.

You might not understand what I'm saying there if you don't follow the ENTIRE league, so I'll let you in on the fact that the Dolphins suck. Like, lost every game they played until week 9, that's the level of suck that Miami brings.

And the Giants beat them by three. A random field goal by the Dolphins would've left the score tied at the end of regulation.

But then, Week 9 saw the Giants beat the Patriots in New England and although it was a narrow margin of victory, and the Patriots are struggling a little bit right now, it was a win and it looks really good on the résumé. No NFC team wins at Foxborough. This was like 18-1 all over again.

All told, they have a decent résumé . Some up spots, some down spots, but they do quality work most weeks, and that's why I have them listed at No. 4.

Surprised that I have them so high? Yeah, me too. Even as I type this, I'm reconsidering it. In fact, if the full list weren't already published over at GuysNation, I'd probably look into changing it. Thousands have already read it today (I can give you the stats if you REALLY want, but you have to give me reason to owe you a favor).

Agree with me? Disagree? If you really want to hit me where it hurts or show me the love, go to that GuysNation site that was aforementioned and that's where you'll leave your comments. And here. Leave it both places, if you will...but you should bear in mind that FOLLOWing me on Twitter (@ GuysNation) and LIKE'ing me on Facebook.com/GuysNation should almost be considered your civic duty...

...or at least maybe a gift for my upcoming birthday.

Or maybe it's just something you'll want to do because we have awesome articles, some of which include half-naked (or mostly naked) women hot enough to be in Playboy... which is true because most of them have already been in Playboy (like for real).

We rule, bottom line.

And so does Bleacher Report...just in a different OMG SPORTY way.
