BCS Standings Week 10: Who's Overrated, Underrated or Just Right?
There's always going to debating when the BCS rankings are released each week.
And rightfully so, because teams that are overrated/underrated do exists, but the BCS does get it right sometimes as well.
Until a playoff system is adopted we'll never be able to pit the elite against one another, so since the BCS is what we got, we might as well use it.
That said, here are the Week 10 BCS rankings and those who are overrated/underrated/just right.
1. LSU (8-0): Just Right
1 of 25Every game has been a blowout from beginning to end and they've defeated five schools who were ranked when LSU played them.
The Bayou Bengals have played a slightly tougher schedule than SEC rival Alabama, and we will find out who is the best on Nov. 5.
Until then however, Les Miles and LSU are deserving of their No. 1 ranking for at least one more week.
And even if LSU falls in Tuscaloosa, don't be surprised if the Tigers sneak back into the No. 2 position as they're collective schedule is strong enough to warrant a rematch with Alabama.
2. Alabama (8-0): Just Right
2 of 25If you really want to know how good the Crimson Tide are, in Week 2 Alabama went into Happy Valley and beat the Penn State Nittany Lions 27-11.
And right now, Joe Pa and company are 8-1.
So, it's for certain that Nick Saban's Tide are literally rolling and although they got off to a slow start at home against Tennessee on October 22, Alabama scored 31 unanswered and defeated the Vols 37-6.
Right now Alabama is the No. 2 team in the country, but that shouldn't matter, because being at least No. 2 after the conference title games is what matters.
Then you have a shot at finishing No. 1, which is all that matters once the season concludes.
3. Oklahoma State (8-0): Just Right
3 of 25The Pokes are right where they should be in the BCS standings and it's the perfect spot with LSU and Alabama playing each other next week.
However, Oklahoma State still has a lot of work to do as three of the remaining four opponents are ranked teams (vs Kansas State, at Texas Tech, vs Oklahoma).
2011 has a good feel than some of the other Cowboys' teams that had a shot at finishing the regular season perfect.
The defense is playing well enough to help the high-powered offense and until Oklahoma State goes down, if they do down, the folks in Stillwater, OK. have a national title shot.
4. Stanford (8-0): Overrated
4 of 25Stanford may still be alive for the national title, but winning on the road over USC is their only impressive win. Sure the Washington Huskies were ranked No. 25 when they met, but that game turned out to be a blowout at home.
That said, the Cardinal can really legitimize themselves in the next month as they play Oregon and Notre Dame. Wins over Oregon and then other Pac-12 opponents in Oregon State and California will also help.
In addition, having a conference title game this season is what can put them over the edge, because if the Cardinal win the North Division, the No. 20 ranked Arizona State Sun Devils will be their final contest.
So by season's end Stanford would then have a solid strength of schedule if they go unbeaten. But right now the schedule has simply just been too weak.
5. Boise State (7-0): Underrated
5 of 25As long as Boise State keeps winning you can't discount them from the national title discussion.
But, as long as the Georgia Bulldogs keep winning then it's only going to help the Broncos that much more.
Strength of schedule is crucial to the rankings, and although Boise's is more difficult this season being in the Mountain West as oppose to the WAC, it's still rather weak.
For Boise to have a realistic shot, Georgia must at least win the SEC East, but with just over one month left in the regular season a lot of things can still happen.
6. Oklahoma (7-1): Overrated
6 of 25The Sooners really got back on track with the dominating win on the road against Kansas State. It was a hostile environment and Oklahoma was vulnerable coming in after a loss.
That said, Bob Stoops' squad ran off 35 second half points and ultimately won 58-17 on the road.
Now, you could make the argument about them not being the best one-loss team. Losing at home to Texas Tech was clearly not on the same level of Oregon losing to LSU.
But, be sure to keep watching Oklahoma because they still get instate-rival and undefeated Oklahoma State on the road in the regular season finale.
7. Arkansas (7-1): Overrated
7 of 25Although the games were on the road, defeating Ole Miss and Vanderbilt by a combined eight points is not impressive by any means.
And Arkansas' lone loss came in a 38-14 beat-down of Alabama, however the win over Texas A&M was impressive.
The Razorbacks do hold some interesting cards though, as they still have to play LSU in November. That game could really shake things up in the BCS, but as of now Arkansas hasn't proven the past two weeks that they are a Top 10 team.
8. Oregon (7-1): Underrated
8 of 25Here is the best one-loss team in the country, Oregon.
The Ducks had a tough outing against the LSU Tigers in Week 1, and now that the Bayou Bengals are ranked No. 1, it's for certain that Oregon has played the nation's best team better than anyone else thus far.
They also still have a shot to repeat as conference champions, as the Ducks travel to Stanford and play the Cardinal in two weeks.
That game will determine the Pac-12 North Division and the Ducks could play spoilers and ruin Stanford's season as well. Just because Oregon has one loss doesn't mean they can't finish in the Top 5.
9. South Carolina (7-1): Just Right
9 of 25The Gamecocks lone loss at home against Auburn is their only bump this season. And although their previous two wins haven't been completely impressive, they're doing it without RB Marcus Lattimore.
Now include QB Stephen Garcia being dismissed and the mentality of South Carolina was arguably shot by mid-season.
This week we will find out how good South Carolina is however, as they play at No. 7 Arkansas, and then again on November 26, they play host to the No. 11 Clemson Tigers.
10. Nebraska (7-1): Just Right
10 of 25The Cornhuskers may have gotten destroyed on the road to Wisconsin in Madison, but hardly anyone defeats the Badgers in Madison.
That said, Nebraska got two big wins over Ohio State and Michigan State in the Big Ten.
If Bo Pelini and company can keep doing work, appearing in their third-straight conference title game is quite possible.
11. Clemson (8-1): Just Right
11 of 25Throughout the history of college football there have been many elite teams fall to a solid unranked opponent on the road.
So, the Clemson Tigers are now in good company.
Now, the season isn't lost either because the ACC championship and a BCS bowl bid are still alive.
The Tigers began the season unranked, therefore, where they are now is quite an accomplishment and 2011 is by no means a disappointment right now.
12. Virginia Tech (8-1): Overrated
12 of 25The Hokies have only played one ranked team thus far, Clemson, and it was a home game in which they lost.
Virginia Tech has simply not been all that impressive since getting their Top 15 preseason ranking, and with games still against Georgia Tech, North Carolina, and Virginia, getting a chance to defend their ACC title isn't for certain either.
And if we have learned anything from history, such as 2010, Virginia Tech wasn't worthy of a BCS bid as Stanford demolished them in last season's Orange Bowl.
13. Houston (8-0): Overrated
13 of 25Houston may be overrated, but only slightly.
They haven't played a ranked team yet this season, but have dominated in every game.
Therefore, the Cougars are worthy of at least a Top 15/20 ranking for their efforts.
Now, if they go 13-0 they should most definitely be considered for a BCS bowl bid, but don't be surprised if Houston gets left out thanks to a very weak schedule.
14. Kansas State (7-1): Just Right
14 of 25It was bound to happen, and the Oklahoma Sooners proved it.
You can't completely rely on winning games in a major college conference with just defense and special teams.
Sure they help, as both are important aspects to fielding a complete team, but not having a consistent offense is devastating to one's confidence.
No matter how many times a defense holds the opponent, it kills when the offense can't capitalize and that's exactly what describes Kansas State.
The Sooners exploited them and they lost convincingly.
15. Michigan (7-1): Overrated
15 of 25The Wolverines may be 7-1, but their only loss is to the No. 17 ranked Michigan State Spartans and all seven wins are against no ranked teams.
The home win over Notre Dame has been their best win, but with the Irish only being slightly above mediocre, Michigan's strength of schedule has played against them.
And with Nebraska pitting as their only remaining ranked opponent, it will be tough to put a one-loss Michigan team into the Top 10 unless they annihilate every opponent from here on out.
16. Penn State (8-1): Overrated
16 of 25Don't let Penn State's 8-1 record fool you, none of the wins, much like Michigan, have come against a ranked opponent, and their sole loss was to a ranked opponent (Alabama).
Now the Nittany Lions do still have a shot at winning the Big Ten, but with their final three games against Nebraska, Ohio State, and Wisconsin, don't be shocked if Joe Paterno and company finish the regular season on a three game losing streak.
17. Michigan State (6-2): Underrated
17 of 25Losing to Nebraska on the road felt like a forgone conclusion after Sparty beat Ohio State, Michigan, and Wisconsin all in consecutive weeks.
And although winning over the Badgers was big, it didn't help much as Sconnie fell to the Bucks' on the road.
That said, Sparty is still alive to contend for a second-straight Big Ten title, the question is whether they can bounce back from such a tough loss.
The Cornhuskers are now ranked in the Top 10, so Michigan State shouldn't be punished too much for falling in Lincoln.
18. Georgia (6-2): Just Right
18 of 25The Bulldogs are riding a six game winning streak after their victory over Florida last week.
But, since none of Georgia's wins have come against any ranked teams, or any with a winning record for that matter, the Dawgs are right where they should be.
Both losses have come against two teams in the Top 10 (Boise and South Carolina), however, with Auburn and Georgia Tech left on the schedule, the Bulldogs could still finish 10-2 and with a solid resume to boot.
Not to mention winning the SEC East is still alive, provided that the Gamecocks slip up just one more time.
19. Arizona State (6-2): Just Right
19 of 25Arizona State has been a conundrum this season.
In Week 3 they lost to now unranked Illinois on the road, but beat USC 43-22 at home the following week.
They only lost 41-27 to Oregon on the road and are the current Pac-12 South front-runners.
When it comes time for the Pac-12 title game, the Sun Devils could very well be 10-2 and be looking to get revenge on Oregon (provided that the Ducks win the north).
Until then though, Vontaze Burfict and company are in the right spot as they still have some proving to do.
20. Wisconsin (6-2): Just Right
20 of 25Despite starting 6-0 the Wisconsin Badgers have lost two straight games and have fallen from grace in the BCS.
That said, both losses have come on the road to Michigan State and Ohio State in consecutive weeks, so you can't punish them too much for falling in tough road games.
The Badgers' Big Ten title hopes are still alive also, as Penn State and Illinois still remain, both of whom are in the same Big Ten division as Sconnie.
Maybe a rematch with Sparty or the 'Huskers happens in 2011?
21. Texas (6-2): Overrated
21 of 25It's clear the CPU loves the Longhorns, because based on their two losses against Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, Texas has a bunch of work to do.
For starters Texas got ranked as high as No. 10 after their 4-0 start, then fell from the rankings after losing to the Pokes.
But just one dominating win over a very weak Kansas team was enough to get them back in. Unless the Longhorns finish 9-3 or 10-2 they shouldn't be ranked, as Kansas State remains as the only ranked opponent.
22. Auburn (6-3): Just Right
22 of 25This season the Auburn Tigers are beating the teams they're suppose to beat, and they're losing to the teams that's they're not suppose to beat, it's that simple.
Coming into the season you couldn't have expected Auburn to beat LSU or Arkansas, and you can't expect them to beat Alabama either.
However, they got a big road win over South Carolina and other SEC wins against Florida and Mississippi State.
The Tigers will get a solid bowl game, and after all the talent that was lost, head coach Gene Chizik can't be disappointed.
23. Georgia Tech (7-2): Underrated
23 of 25Georgia Tech may have started out an unexpected 6-0, but they shouldn't have dropped nearly as far as they did after losing two straight.
Both those losses came on the road against conference rivals in Virginia and Miami, both of which are playing better than everyone expected despite not being elite.
Then, the Yellow Jackets proved they can be elite in the 31-17 win over Clemson.
This is a team who could very well win the ACC, but we'll find out more about Tech when they Virginia Tech on November 10.
24. West Virginia (6-2): Overrated
24 of 25Right now the best team in the Big East are the Cincinnati Bearcats.
West Virginia will be a formidable opponent, but the CPU got it wrong in the Big East.
The Mountaineers have just as much to prove as the Bearcats, but Cincinnati's wins are slightly more impressive.
Both are very close, as evidence by their rankings in the polls, however, until they play each other on November 12 will there be any proof of who's the best in the Big East.
25. Southern Miss (7-1): Just Right
25 of 25Southern Miss getting into the BCS Top 25 really adds a lot to the strength of the Conference USA.
The Houston Cougars are a Top 15 team and if both continue to win and meet in the conference championship game, some sparks could really fly in the BCS.
Therefore, be sure to keep an eye on Southern Miss as the season continues.
