World Series Game 7: Cardinals Will Ride Momentum and Complete Epic Comeback

Andrew KulhaOct 28, 2011

Game 6 of the 2011 World Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers was arguably one of greatest baseball games ever, and one of the most exciting moments in sports.

Everything is always bigger, brighter and more important in the postseason, and obviously the pinnacle of that is the World Series.

Down 3-2 in the series the Cardinals found themselves on the brink of elimination in more ways than one during Game 6. But each and every time they found a way to make a clutch at bat, knock one over the wall and somehow scrap together a few more runs.

The Cardinals never gave up and they deserved the win, but to be fair, the Rangers never gave up either.

Seemingly every time the Cardinals came up with the runs to tie the game, the Rangers would come up the next at bat and knock one out of the park.

No matter what the Rangers did though, there was no stopping St. Louis.

It's hard to win a championship, and Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington knows all too well, according to Andy McCullough of the Newark Star-Ledger.

"

“We just kept battling,” David Freese said. “That defines our team, the way we came back.”

To do so felt so unlikely, even after four hours and 33 minutes of unrelenting baseball. It was Freese, who grew up about 30 miles from Busch Stadium, who starred, but his teammates deserve as much of the credit. Albert Pujols opened the ninth inning rally with a double. Berkman scored four runs. Allen Craig swatted an eighth-inning homer that appeared inconsequential, but was far from it.

And the Rangers were left with the realization that they squandered the chance to win their first World Series. How cruel it was. Texas operated as a model of inefficiency during the first half of the game. Thirteen of their first 27 batters reached base, but they only managed four runs. In the end, they stranded 12 runners and wasted three St. Louis errors.

“It’s not that easy to win a championship,” manager Ron Washington said. “As we found out tonight.”

"

It is hard to win a championship, and unfortunately for the Rangers they may have blown their shot.

It's hard not to see this St. Louis team for what they are. They are a team of fighters, winners, and they won't give up until the last pitch is thrown.

Give them an inch and they'll take a mile. Give them a game and they'll take two.

The Rangers gave them a game back, and in the process, gave them new life and new hope.

I believe the Cardinals are going to ride the momentum of Game 6 all the way to a Game 7 World Series win to complete their epic comeback.
