Chicago Bulls: Why a 2nd Go-Round with Kirk Hinrich Is Low Risk, High Reward
Kirk Hinrich is one of my favorite Chicago Bulls of all-time. Not on MJ and Pip's level, or D-Rose, but he's high on my list.
He was the consummate professional, he accepted demotions and praise the same throughout his time in Chicago. Most of all, Captain Kirk loves the Bulls and I believe he would welcome a trade or signing to return.
Why would the Bulls want to bring Hinrich back? That is easy, he can play shooting guard or point guard. He offers three point shooting in the neighborhood of what you get from Kyle Korver, without the horrible defense.
Hinrich shot 40 percent from three last year, Korver shot just over 41 percent. Kirk is a good defender, so in a sense, he blends the best parts of Ronnie Brewer and Korver into one guy. The only problem is, he isn't as big and the Bulls would surely be small in the backcourt.
I think they could overcome that impediment with versatility.
Coach Tom Thibodeau loves Hinrich and has spoke of his admiration for the way he plays the game. He did so in such a way, that it sounded as if he really wished he had a chance to coach him.
Hinrich was always a favorite of his teammates and he is 30 years old. Those two factors should only increase his effectiveness as a leader on the team. Yet he is humble and professional enough to realize, this is Derrick Rose's team now more than it was when he left.
Hinrich is due to make $8 million dollars this season, whenever it starts. He will then be an unrestricted free agent.
So on top of all the basketball reasons why Hinrich is a good fit, it makes business sense as well. He comes off the books at the end of the season. The Bulls can choose to bring him back or not.
The Bulls will probably have company in pursuit of Hinrich, even though he'd likely prefer to play in Chicago.
The Hawks won't want or be able to take on a contract with Joe Johnson, Josh Smith and the hopes of landing Dwight Howard.
The Bulls will have to be creative, possibly involving a third team, but it would be worth it to bring Hinrich back. Even if it means a pick and Taj Gibson or Omer Asik.
If the Bulls don't make a big splash for a young shooting guard like Marcus Thornton or OJ Mayo, Hinrich should be the man.
