Top 10 Games of the 2008 Milwaukee Brewers Season

Curt HoggDec 5, 2008

Whether or not you're a Brewer fan, you have to admit that the Brew Crew's 2008 season, and final week in particular, was incredible. It was a great year for fans who live for the nail-biting games.

Come on Cubs fans, you know you kept checking the score to see if the Brewers pulled out another win. I have come up with the top 10 games of this past season.

10. April 4

The 2008 Home Opener was a big success as the Brewers routed the Giants, 11-3. Bill Hall hit two home runs to propel the Brewers to victory. The victory was a sign of lots of fun and exciting games at Miller Park to come.

9. Sept. 26

The Brewers were tied with the Mets with three games left to play. Jeff Suppan needed to come through with a big-game performance. He went seven innings and allowed one run.

Rickie Weeks came through with a big home run to put the Brewers up. Salomon Torres sealed the deal to win 5-1 and a Mets' loss gave the Brewers a one-game lead in the Wild Card standings.

8. Aug. 10

Milwaukee was knotted up with Washington at 1-1 headed into the eighth. Eric "Gag me" Gagne followed his trend of blowing games after giving up three runs on homers to Austin Kearns and Lastings Milledge.

Back-up catcher Mike Rivera sliced a ball down the left field line that stayed fair. All three runners scored and the game was tied at 4 apiece! The Brewers spoiled so many chances in extra innings and J.J. Hardy was determined to stop it.

Now I know you thought I was going to say he hit a walk-off homer, but he didn't. Gabe Kapler, in his seventh at-bat, nailed a ball down the left field line. Fair ball! It hit the foul pole for a walk-off homer and Milwaukee won in 13 innings!

7. May 9

The Brewers were coming home after a dreadful six-game losing streak. The game looked bleak with Milwaukee down by one with two outs. J.J. Hardy kept the game alive with a single, and Kapler followed him with another one-bagger.

Jason Kendall walked bringing up a staggering Rickie Weeks. In his retro ball and glove logo uniform, he lined Cardinals closer Jason Isringhausen's pitch to left field for a walk-off, two-run single to end the losing streak!

6. July 22

The Brewers had been blanked for the first six innings, but remained resilient against St. Louis. Hardy and Weeks both had two-out RBI in the eighth and Billy Hall smoked a homer to left-center to silence the crowd and give the Brewers the lead.

This was the second straight night he had hit a go-ahead homer in the ninth or later.

5. Sept. 23

The Brewers didn't gain any ground in the Wild Card race. But hey, it was one heck of a game. Mike Cameron hit a go-ahead two-run double in the seventh before Guillermo Mota surrendered the lead.

Jason Kendall hit a big game-tying single in the eighth and the Brewers needed a big hit. Enter: Prince Fielder. He launched a walk-off home run and the Brewers threw a fiesta for him at home plate!

4. July 8

Do you like standing ovations? Well, if you do, you should've been at the July 8 Brewers-Rockies game. The Miller Park crowd was on their feet for the new acquisition, CC Sabathia.

Sabathia made his Brewer debut and gave Milwaukee six solid innings and received a "W." Despite his "disappointment" in his 0-for-2 performance at the plate, he made up for it with his pitching. This game was the first of many great times with CC.

3. July 24

The day after CC Sabathia threw a shutout, the Brewers were ready for a St. Louis sweep. Ben Sheets threw seven innings and allowed only two runs, but was on the hook for the loss.

In the ninth, Ryan Braun stepped up with one on and one out with the score at 3-2, Cards. He launched a pitch into almost the exact same spot Hall had launched his two previous home runs.

Braun just stood and admired his work of art while the boos rang through Busch Stadium. The Crew closed out the game and left town with a sweep and an eight-game win streak.

2. Sept. 25

I was so excited to go to this game. As I entered the Miller Park gates, I was handed a rally towel. At the time, I didn't expect all of the waving it would do.

Yovanni Gallardo, who had been injured for four-and-a-half months, was starting. The scoring was low and it was getting cold.

I had school the next day and my mom said we had to go after the 11th inning (I wasn't going to leave. I said I would catch a city bus home). The table was set for Braun.

The bases were loaded and the count was full. A ball would win the game, but that ball wouldn't come as Braun fought off pitch after pitch.

And then...BANG! Braun crushed a no-doubter to the left field bleachers for another walk-off hit...this time a grand slam! I lost my voice from screaming so loudly!

1. Sept. 28

The Brewers trailed by one run until the sixth inning, when Craig Counsell drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 1-1. Ryan Braun, Mr. Clutch, then stepped up in the eighth with one runner on and two outs. Gone!

He jacked one to the Brewers' bullpen were the relievers scrambled to get the ball. CC Sabathia then came on and allowed Ryan Theriot to reach base. Derrek Lee then grounded a ball to Durham. 4-6-3 double play!

The Mets' loss allowed the Brewers to pop the champagne and celebrate their first playoff berth in 26 years.
