Marcus Lattimore Video: Watch Knee Injury Shatter Heisman Hopeful's Dreams
South Carolina Gamecocks running back Marcus Lattimore essentially watched his Heisman Trophy hopes and maybe even some of his college football season slip away today against Mississippi State.
Lattimore was taken out of South Carolina's 14-12 win over Mississippi State with a knee injury after being hit in the knee while blocking.
He was helped over to the sideline and was taken care of by the training staff. It was apparently bad enough that his mother actually had to come down from the stands to be with him.
When mom has to enter the equation, you know that the situation isn't good, especially with an injury.
He left game and went to the locker room in crutches.
As far as updates are concerned, so far things aren't looking good.
Here is an update from Josh Kendall of CBS Sports:
"RB Marcus Lattimore, who has a left knee sprain, will be given an MRI either Saturday night or Sunday after the team returns to Columbia, S.C., from Starkville, Miss. Lattimore left the team locker room on crutches wearing a large brace on his left leg.
"
Jerry Hinnen of CBS Sports reports on head coach Steve Spurriers thoughts:
"The initial diagnosis from the locker room is that Lattimore has suffered a left knee sprain. Steve Spurrier told reporters after the game that Lattimore's injury "could be serious" and that the sophomore "could be out a while."
"
This would be a huge personal blow to Lattimore, but it will also leave the Gamecocks with a big-time hole to fill in their backfield.
For Lattimore, this has to be a devastating injury. Not only is he one of the premier running backs in the SEC, but he was highly considered to be a Heisman contender.
Coming into the game he was the top rusher in the SEC with 779 yards and nine touchdowns.
