NBA Lockout: Pistons' Ben Gordon Paints Grimmest of Pictures for NBA Lockout
The only thing we have heard from the NBA negotiations is that the chasm is wide between players and owners. But what is the absolute worst possible scenario? Detroit Pistons. Ben Gordon has some thoughts that are hard to swallow.
Gordon recently sat in on the NBA negotiations late last month. The one thing he gleaned from the back and forth is that the state of the Association is a mess.
The Detroit Free Press cited Gordon as stating that the NBA may miss more games, a whole bunch in fact.
"I think there will be more games missed. I expect it might be a year or two. I realized that when I was listening to both sides during the negotiations. I think there will be a lot of games missed and more money is going to go down the drain. I'm preparing for the worst, but hoping for the best.
It just seemed scripted, and they were going through the motions. Sitting there in front of them you could tell they weren't focused on getting a deal. I still don't know the purpose of those meetings. Every guy is ready to play. We have been locked out.
"
The report should be taken with a huge grain of salt, maybe a few of them. This is a cynical basketball player that just wants to get back to the hardwood.
I am sure things are bad, but it's hard to assume that negotiations are going to be as stagnant as they have been lately. While I agree that more games will most likely be missed, I find it hard to believe that more than a year will be lost.
There is certainly little hope that the NBA will come back anytime soon. ESPN reports David Stern has a gut feeling games will be canceled up to Christmas if a deal is not struck by Tuesday.
If I had to guess, Christmas will be left for carrying on with family sans the usual basketball games that are played.
I just don't see over a year of a basketball-barren world. The fans would leave in droves, owners would bleed revenue and the players would seriously consider forming an alternate league.
Gordon got out attention, but this is merely a worst case scenario. Let's pray it never gets that far.
