NFL Picks Week 6: Baltimore Ravens and Teams That Will Cover the Spread Easily

Mike ChiariOct 13, 2011

Most NFL games go down to the wire, so it's a welcome surprise when a team that you bet on holds a commanding lead from start to finish. There are a couple such games every week, but it's simply a matter of identifying them.

Most lines are spot on, so there likely won't be many comfortable covers, but here are three favorites that should be able to cover the spread fairly easily in Week 6.

Philadelphia Eagles

Despite the fact that the Philadelphia Eagles are 1-4, they are pegged as the favorites on a weekly basis. That is again the case in Week 6, as they are favored by two points on the road against the 3-1 Washington Redskins.

While it's certainly a risky bet, the Eagles' backs are now against the wall, so it's do or die for them now. A loss would send them to 1-5 and effectively end their playoff hopes, as they would likely only have one loss to spare for the entirety of the season.

Washington has been impressive this season, but it has yet to beat a team with the talent of the Eagles. The Redskins may also be a nice matchup for the Eagles defense, as quarterback Rex Grossman and Co. aren't likely to rack up too many big plays. If Michael Vick and the Philadelphia offense play their game and protect the ball, then the Eagles should get back on track.

At 5-0, the Detroit Lions are beginning to be given their due as an elite team in the NFL. It's with good reason, too, as the Lions have one of the game's best young quarterbacks in the game in Matthew Stafford, perhaps the league's best receiver in Calvin Johnson and an impressive defense to boot.

The Lions will be 4.5-point favorites when they host the surprising 4-1 San Francisco 49ers this week. Although the 'Niners have been quite impressive to this point, they don't possess a lot of tools. Their defense has been very solid, but it remains to be seen how long quarterback Alex Smith can hold up on offense.

Detroit's pass rush of Ndamukong Suh, Cliff Avril and Kyle Vanden Bosch will certainly test Smith early and often, and it could very well be the difference in the game. I think the 49ers are due for a reality check, and the Lions are just the team to give it to them.

Aside from a Week 2 hiccup against the Tennessee Titans, the 3-1 Baltimore Ravens have been dominant this season. They have embarrassed the likes of the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets, and they seem to be as good defensively as they have been for quite some time.

Add in what is perhaps the most explosive Ravens offense in the team's history, and you get an incredibly well-rounded squad. The Ravens are eight-point favorites as the hosts against the Houston Texans on Sunday. The Texans have been solid in their own right, but will likely be without stud receiver Andre Johnson for the second consecutive week.

The Ravens are among the league's best when it comes to stopping the run, so star running back Arian Foster may have a rough go of it. This will force Texans quarterback Matt Schaub, who is banged up in his own right, to throw the ball with more regularity to largely unproven targets. If that happens, then advantage Ravens.
