Steve Spurrier Video: Watch South Carolina Head Coach Go off on Reporter
Whatever you do, don't make Steve Spurrier angry. You wouldn't like him when he's angry.
Those who would follow this advice must know one thing: Writing things that apparently aren't true is a very, very good way to make Steve Spurrier angry.
We know this because Spurrier was kind enough to demonstrate this anger at a news conference on Tuesday. The South Carolina head coach targeted a writer and threw him under the bus in spectacular fashion, and the whole thing was caught on film.
If you haven't seen it, I definitely recommend watching the clip, which is embedded above. Rants like this from head coaches are few and far between, and Spurrier's is a damn good one.
Courtesy of the USA Today, we know that Spurrier was going after a columnist named Ron Morris, who writes for The State. Morris' mistake, apparently, was writing a column that claimed Spurrier had lured wide receiver Bruce Ellington away from the South Carolina basketball team, basically stealing him.
Said Spurrier:
"I just don't like stories that aren't true, and last spring [Morris] wrote a story about me recruiting Bruce Ellington, and luring him away from the basketball program, and raiding and jilting Coach [Darrin] Horn. A completely fabricated story, and I took exception to that, but that's the only thing I take exception from a sportswriters, when they write stuff that isn't true.
"
Having vented, Spurrier would then go on to invite all the other reporters in the room to a more private session. Morris was left behind.
All I can say is this: Wow.
The other thing I can say is that I don't know whose side to take. Finding the article Morris wrote proved to be difficult, so I'm not sure how far off the rails he went. Judging from what one can see in his profile page on TheState.com, however, it does seem like Morris is something of a negative nelly.
That wouldn't be such a bad thing, but fabricating stories is definitely a no-no. And if you believe Spurrier, that's exactly what Morris did.
Before I leave, let me go through my checklist real quick.
Steve Spurrier? Check. Ron Morris? Check. Awkward, angry press conference? Check. Lesson on journalistic ethics? Check.
Yup, we're all good here.
