UFC 136 Results: Ranking The Top 10 Featherweights in the UFC
Saturday night, Jose Aldo was able to defend his title by defeating Kenny Florian by unanimous decision.
Although it wasn't a brutal knockout as many, like me, were expecting, it was an impressive display nonetheless, as Aldo won four out of five rounds from Florian.
Kenny was known for a long time as one of the best lightweights in the UFC, and as soon as he dropped to featherweight, he became an immediate title challenger.
Unfortunately, he still didn't earn his UFC gold, but that doesn't mean he isn't a top featherweight.
Check out the updated top 10 rankings.
No. 10: Darren Elkins
1 of 10Darren Elkins is a bright young prospect in the 145-pound division.
Elkins won on Saturday night as he defeated Tiequan Zhang by unanimous decision, and he avoided several guillotine chokes in the process.
Elkins has notable victories over Zhang, Michihiro Omigawa, Duane Ludwig and Pat Curran.
No. 9: Tyson Griffin
2 of 10Tyson Griffin narrowly earns a spot on this list, as he only has one fight at featherweight, and it was a majority decision over one-time title challenger Manny Gamburyan.
Prior to his drop to featherweight, Griffin was on a three-fight losing skid in the lightweight division and would have likely been dropped from the promotion had he not dropped the 10 pounds.
Griffin has notable victories over Urijah Faber, Clay Guida, Gleison Tibau and Hermes Franca.
No. 8: George Roop
3 of 10George Roop has been a bit inconsistent as of late, but it has still been good enough to keep him in the top 10.
In his last five fights at featherweight, he is 3-1-1, with the loss coming to Mark Hominick, and the draw being a split draw with Leonard Garcia after Roop had a point deducted.
Roop has notable victories over Josh Grispi and Chan Sung Jung.
No. 7: Diego Nunes
4 of 10Diego Nunes is one of the best strikers in the featherweight division.
Nunes is 5-2 in his UFC/WEC career, and his only losses have been unanimous decisions to LC Davis and Kenny Florian—nothing to be ashamed of.
Nunes has notable victories over Mike Brown and Raphael Assunção.
No. 6: Dustin Poirier
5 of 10Dustin Poirier has had a big year. First, he upset Josh Grispi at UFC 125, then he won a unanimous decision over Jason Young at UFC 131. Now he gets to fight at the UFC's debut card on Fox against Pablo Garza.
Poirier is 10-1 in his career, and is 2-0 in the featherweight division.
He has notable victories over Josh Grispi and Zach Micklewright.
No. 5: Erik Koch
6 of 10Erik Koch is quickly becoming a huge threat in the featherweight division.
He is currently riding a four-fight winning streak, including victories over Raphael Assuncao and Jonathan Brookins.
His only career loss came to the current No. 1 contender, Chad Mendes.
Koch has notable victories over Jonathan Brookins and Raphael Assuncao.
No. 4: Kenny Florian
7 of 10Kenny Florian is the former, two-time lightweight title challenger and a one-time featherweight title challenger.
He fell short in every fight.
Florian may never get another shot at a UFC title, and he will go down in history as one of the best fighters to never wear UFC gold.
Florian has notable victories over Diego Nunes, Takanori Gomi, Clay Guida, Joe Stevenson, Roger Huerta and Joe Lauzon.
No. 3: Mark Hominick
8 of 10Mark "The Machine" Hominick put up the best fight that anyone has against Aldo, as he was able to arguably win two rounds from Aldo.
Hominick was on a five-win streak, with four finishes, before the fight with Aldo, so when he fights again, look for him to come back gunning for another title shot.
Hominick has notable victories over George Roop, Leonard Garcia, Bryan Caraway and Yves Edwards.
No. 2: Chad Mendes
9 of 10Chad Mendes is the current No. 2 featherweight in the world and the current No. 1 contender to Jose Aldo's title.
Mendes is a perfect 11-0 in his MMA career and is ready for his title shot against Aldo.
Mendes has notable victories over Rani Yahya, Michihiro Omigawa, Cub Swanson and Erik Koch.
No. 1: Jose Aldo
10 of 10No real surprise with the No. 1 here.
Aldo is on a 13-fight win streak, 10 fights in the UFC/WEC, and is known as one of the most explosive fighters in the game today.
Aldo won the title at WEC 44 by defeating Mike Brown, and he hasn't looked back since.
Aldo has notable victories over Jonathan Brookins, Cub Swanson, Mike Brown, Manny Gamburyan, Urijah Faber, Mark Hominick and Kenny Florian.
