Seahawks vs. Giants: 5 Reasons Seattle Will Win in New York
Like Coach Pete Carroll, we all have been scratching our heads, trying to figure out how to play catch-up. This week will be the first opportunity to play with a lead and it will make the difference.
Here are the five players and the resulting reasons this week's game is a turning point in the Seahawks' season.
Let's have a look at what to watch for this weekend.
Tarvaris Jackson Gained a Ton of Confidence Playing Atlanta
1 of 5Tarvaris Jackson has found a home, and a pocket of protection. In two-consecutive weeks, the no-huddle with Jackson at the helm has Seattle moving the ball and scoring points.
One draw back to this is teams will be expecting it and I am sure Tom Coughlin will have some answers for how to slow it down. I said slow it down, not stop it.
Here is a best case scenario for the beginning of the game this weekend:
We win the toss again and choose to receive the ball. Before the crowd settles in, Seattle decides to open things up and runs a play action pass for it's first play from scrimmage at the 35 yard line where Leon Washington returned the first kick off.
The play action gives Tarvaris just enough time to launch the ball to Ben Obomanu streaking down the left side as Sidney Rice is triple teamed going long on the right side where Jackson "usually" throws.
Virtually alone, Obomanu catches the ball in stride and scores on the first play from scrimmage.
Earl Thomas Please Step Foward
2 of 5After the Seahawks score quickly, look for Earl Thomas to put pressure on Eli Manning early before Manning can get used to Thomas' speed.
Playing at home after two road games leads to a bit of overconfidence for the Giants, after all they are playing the Seattle Seahawks, who haven't won a road game on the east coast since 2007.
Leroy Hill gets to blitz early and often in an attempt to disrupt Manning early, and it works. Eli has no time to set-up and Earl Thomas picks off a pass intended for Eli's favorite target Hakeem Nicks. It's a short distance to the end zone and the Seahawks are up by 14.
Kam Chancellor Meet Ahmad Bradshaw
3 of 5Kam Chancellor and the rest of the Seattle defense playing with a lead. This is something that hasn't happened so far this year, but it changes the defense as much as it does the offense.
Playing with a lead Seattle is able to blitz more often, especially after shutting down the run game early.
If the Giants are thinking they know this team from playing them last season or watching film of this season so far, they are in for a surprise.
As much as any team in the NFL, Seattle is catching up from a shortened offseason, gaining confidence and coming together stronger each week. There are more returning players on defense than offense, but the changes have been significant.
Brandon Browner is physical and smothering in coverage. Alan Branch has plugged the middle, and linebacker A.J Wright has been effective in his role as starter.
Each week this unit plays together, the more they work together better. Young aggressive and talented. This week pressure from the edges and blitzes will create just enough pressure to rattle Eli, disrupting his throws just enough to give Thomas and Chancellor time to jump a few routes.
Doug Baldwin, Golden Tate, Sidney Rice and Kris Durham Catching the Short Pass.
4 of 5Certainly at some point in this game the defensive line of New York will get going and try to take the game over. We have seen it before. This line is a force, there is no doubt about that.
Sometimes the best way to deal with a huge rush is the quick pass. Doug Baldwin's emergence as a dependable slot receiver has been well documented in the Seattle press this week.
The Seahawks have lots of options for the hot read, including Kris Durham this week who is making an appearance because Mike Williams sits out nursing a concussion from last weeks game. And Sidney Rice is just getting started showing his talent to the Seahawks and their fans.
Durham played for Georgia in college and was eclipsed by A J Green, but is a tall, talented possession receiver. Given the opportunity this week he will make catches to keep the chains moving and Seattle's offense on the field.
Golden Tate will have a chance to finally step up and make a difference in the regular season. This Giants defense reminds me of the Raider team Tate shredded in the final exhibition game this year.
The other option to offset a strong pass rush is a screen pass or a well timed draw. Justin Forsett is well suited for both. Small, fast and strong through the line. Go get em.
The Seattle Seahawks Have Talented and Young.
5 of 5With any team, playing together makes a difference. With a young team it depends on the level of talent. The Seattle Seahawks have talent. Speed, size, strength and talent. The New York Giants have been one of the biggest, strongest teams in the league for years.
The question is will youth turn the tide? Five weeks into the season talent begins to show.
Being one of the youngest teams in the league has lead to a slow start in 2011. Having "the" youngest offensive line has made things even more difficult.
However, New York can be beat. There have been times when this team looses concentration and makes mental mistakes. Tom Coughlin is an excellent coach, but there have been times when communications break down and frustrations set in. Get to this team early, pressure Eli Manning, put him on the ground and the Giants will fall.
This game will end up being a punch you in the mouth defensive struggle, with Seattle running its no huddle offense to keep New York off center and put pressure on the Giants' defense.
If Seattle can keep the pace up, it should wear an older team down. The trick will be moving the ball around effectively and getting some production out of the running game. Marshawn Lynch believes his effectiveness improves with more carries.
I hope he is right. Another Beast Quake would do wonders for this team going into a bye week.
