Arsenal News: Heat on Gunners' Boss Arsene Wenger Should Quiet Until Season Ends

Tim DanielsOct 5, 2011

Even though the summer transfer window is now a distant memory, the criticism of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger remains. The Gunners have so many important games coming up on the horizon that it's time to move on, at least until the season ends next May.

The latest person to come to Wenger's defense is midfielder Jack Wilshere who, while reaffirming his long-term commitment to Emirates, made his thoughts on the situation crystal clear (via ESPNsoccernet).

"

"We do get a harder time from the critics than most teams but we haven't won anything for six years and that's not good enough for Arsenal," Wilshere said. "It is harsh, though, especially on the boss. He has been there for 15 years and been great for Arsenal. The criticism Arsene gets is just a joke."

Wilshere joins the list of people who have pledged their support for the long-term boss. It's a list that includes the Arsenal brass, which should make it pretty obvious there is no move imminent. For whatever reason, that hasn't quieted Wenger's critics.

The Gunners have started the Champions League well with a draw on the road against Borussia Dortmund and a home win over Olympiakos. So it's not like the season is a complete loss and the fans have nothing better to discuss than Wenger's status.

There have been a couple instances where it appeared Arsenal was gaining momentum before quickly losing it again. A win over Swansea City and the Dortmund draw had Wenger optimistic before a wild 4-3 loss to Blackburn. Then, the Gunners strung three wins together before failing to earn a point at Tottenham.

It's not like the squad is complete devoid of talent. They just need younger players to fill bigger roles, which takes time. Wenger was put in a very difficult situation over the summer and did about all he could with the hand he was dealt. Now he's trying to build the team back up again.

The fact of the matter remains: Extra criticism doesn't have any positive impact. It just forces Wenger and his players to answer more questions about his future instead of focusing on what's in front of them right now.

There will be plenty of time for second-guessing after the season ends. As for now, it's time to move on from what was and let Wenger show what he can do with his fresh-faced lineup.
