Tony Romo: Cowboys' Star QB Will Get Last Laugh over Redskins' Chris Cooley

Mike ChiariOct 4, 2011

After back-to-back come-from-behind victories, the Dallas Cowboys seemed to have turned the corner following a late-game collapse against the New York Jets in Week 1, but Dallas blew a 24-point lead in a loss to the Detroit Lions Sunday.

Quarterback Tony Romo, who was courageous in defeating the San Francisco 49ers and Washington Redskins despite broken ribs and a punctured lung, was one of the main culprits in the Cowboys' collapse against Detroit as he threw three second-half interceptions.

One person who took a great amount of joy in the failures of Romo and the Cowboys was Redskins tight end Chris Cooley who was ecstatic to see that the Lions had come back and won, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.

"

“It’s so good,” Chris Cooley said of seeing Romo and the Cowboys give up a 27-3 lead to the Lions, via Dan Steinberg of theWashington Post. “I was watching the scoreboard in St. Louis, and I didn’t see that they’d lost really until they end, I thought they blew them out so I kind of stopped paying attention. It’s amazing, amazing to watch him choke like that."

"

Cooley continued by saying that he would like to beat Romo in a cage fight, which would be interesting to see provided his own proneness to injury.

"

"I’m gonna be honest, I don’t know what kind of cage fighting skills he has. I would probably try to incorporate my wrestling ability, like when I was in high school. Obviously it’s been a while, but I didn’t like to beat people fast. I like to embarrass ‘em a little bit. Like, take a 24-point lead, and then just play with it a little bit.”

"

Rooting against a divisional rival is obviously fair game, but I can't help but wonder why Cooley was so happy to see Romo fail. If he loves to see the Cowboys lose so much, then he and his teammates probably should have handed them a loss on Monday Night Football last week.

The Redskins couldn't hold onto a lead of their own even though Romo was compromised by injury and was without his No. 1 target in wide receiver Miles Austin. Had the 'Skins beaten the Cowboys then I could get behind Cooley's trash talk, but it comes across as weak after Romo just defeated them.

It can be argued that Cooley and the Redskins have bragging rights as they are tied atop the NFC East with a 3-1 record, but I don't see Washington as anything more than a flash in the pan. A Week 1 win over the New York Giants was solid, but victories over the Arizona Cardinals and St. Louis Rams aren't impressive in the least.

At full strength, there is no question that Dallas has the more talented team, and it was able to beat Washington despite a number of injuries. The Cowboys' biggest issue is psychological, and if they can get over that, then they have the potential to be one of the league's best teams.

The Cowboys and Redskins will face off again in Week 11, so it will be much clearer at that point as to which team is actually better. Cooley will have another chance to beat the Cowboys, but if he doesn't, then perhaps he'll learn to keep his mouth shut.

Ultimately, once the Cowboys get healthy, I believe that they will be in contention for a playoff spot, and by Week 11 I think the Redskins will have come back down to Earth. Things may be looking dire for Romo and the Cowboys now, but Cooley is running his mouth far too much for a player on a team that couldn't beat the Cowboys themselves.
